    Rooted Android Device discussion

Anyone here own a rooted android device?

I am currently running a SenseUI rom on htc magic/mytouch 3g. I got it running nice and smooth, i love this thing.

So any other root users on r3v? Use this thread to discuss anything about rooted android devices.

edit: For the people that don't know what the hell I'm talking about, Android is the operating platform created by Google to run on mobile phone devices, i.e. the T-mobile Mytouch 3g, HTC Eris and Motorola Droid . Rooting is kind of like the Android equivalent of Jail breaking an iPhone. it allows the use of a wider variety of apps and other customization.

      Never fear. I is here.

I'm sporting a G1 (HTC Dream) running Android 1.6. And firmly maintaining hope that they will include the G1 in the upcoming 2.0 update. Everyone is freaking out, thinking that they're not going to, but everyone did the same thing when the 1.6 update was released, and the G1 got it, so I'm not worried. It doesn't make any sense that they'd abandon a device that's only a year old.

True. When v5.0os came out for the BB's, (Specifically the Storm2) they made it work for most of the newer models. A big firmware boost should help out the G1, and make a lot of changes for Droid, eros, etc. folks.

I know one of the big reasons is to allow bluetooth file transfer to/from the phone. As it ships, the MT3G can only do that over a cord. I've thought about doing mine but I don't know s**t about how it works and I would no doubt break the thing.

I rooted my brothers Sprint HTC Hero to test it out before I did mine. He's having some force close problems, much poorer battery life, voicemail icon disappeared, and some other miscellaneous oddities.

I'm going to try to get a new rom and see if that fixes it.

I have an HTC Hero from Sprint. Havent rooted it yet. Are his issues related to a custom rom you loaded or from rooting itself?

I am assuming its just like UNIX so you dont actually need a new ROM to root, just give myself access to my current HTC build. I would like to get 2.1 now but wouldnt be willing to trade stability. I just want to uninstall some of the BS apps that HTC/Sprint loaded and gain more control over the phone.

SenseUI is the shit, it makes the phone less of a computer by putting a phone/multimedia device skin on it so you can configure quick access to it and customize 6 home screens with widgets and shit. Im guessing its why there is a delay in HTC pushing out updates.
                      Im now E30less.

yeah i understand what you guys are saying. i was also very hesitant to root my device because i didn't want to mess anything up and end up bricking my phone. but i took a chance, and I'm not even super savvy when it comes to hacking and stuff like that and it worked.

as far as force closing a lot and the other stability issues you guys mentioned, it comes down to the ROM you get. as far as SenseUI there are a lot of really good ones out now and they keep updating with better ones. the 2.0 ROMs are starting to come out but i, personally prefer staying on Sense for now until the get a really good 2.0 ROM.

there is always the chance of getting a crappy ROM but as long if you follow instructions carefully you can always revert back and even unroot the device.

i got the latest version of SuperMagic running SenseUI on my phone. i cant think of the details off the top of my head but i can look it up if som1 is interested. PM me.

I'm really not sure, I've always been pretty handy with the computer but I'm completely new to google android and rooting.

That's good to know, thank you. Hopefully a new rom will fix some problems.
