Looking to go overseas for a jobby job...Inputs?

There has to be contractors on this board. Im not talking military but DoD civilians living in the Middle East. Can you chime in on what you do and what the pros and cons are surrounding where you are at? If this sounds vague..Im sorry....the ones who know will clear it up I hope....TIA...JUSTIN (had to post that icon....they were in sync to my techno music)....lol

I'd check on the possibility of getting a work visa. Apparently other countries will not allow you to work like visitors can here.

Thats not a concern. It would be done through the company. Italy was like that when I lived there. The Italians had to sponsor you. I just want to know pros and cons of the areas and likes/dislikes...

Well if you dont mind going into a war zone CSC is always hiring.

If youre wanting to go into Europe good luck. Nobody is going to give you a look unless you bring something unique to the table.

I used to work in Germany and would pull 90 day rotations out of Prince Sultan before it closed in 03.

Here is the number one ? of the day. What are you qualified for? Maybe start with the major DOD contractors that you are qualified to work for.

Next question, do you have an active security clearance? It must not lapse more than 6 months for a TS and 1 year for a secret the last time I was apply for a job because of the backlog of background checks.

                What do you do????

There are plenty of opportunity for over seas work in the oil and gas business. I nearly went to south Africa this spring, till they told me what the hazard pay was. That killed it, way to dangerous (the natives! not so much the work, are kinda hostile)

I appreciate all your replies. Its not what I do for a living that was of concern but what YOU all did and where. I was in the USAF for 10 years as a F-16 Electrician. Got out Nov 07. Secret clearance just lapsed Nov 09. I build helicopters now and going to school full time for Biomedical (Electrical) Engineering. Have a chance to make xxxK a year in the Middle East. I lived in Kuwait for 7 months and Turkey for 6 months besides Italy for 3 years. I really just wanted some inside info from people that have been contracted in the Middle East..thats all.

And as far as "bringing something to the table" for a European job...I have a contact for Raytheon working on the Blackhawks in Italy....but it doesnt pay as well as this job does...lol.

Working abroad = tax free up till 90K a year. Other than that it's what you negotiate into your contract.

You build helicopters? i.e. manufacturing? Look into getting your A&P license. A&P mechanics make quite a bit in the middle east, Heli's are used alot for oil and gas in Dubai and the Emirates, I am still tempted to go work there for a few years you get paid very well with bonus after 5 years and the likes, in the neighbourhood of 150k and up. However most companies require around 4 years of experience on type before they will hire you, Bell 412 time is good, AW-139 is the new technology but they are having some major teething problems. Now if you want to go to the dark side Blackwater operates a fleet of Bell mediums and is involved in alot of shady CIA ops, on the plus side I think they hire some apprentices.

M-technik-3, how do you get the tax free till 90k? I'm working overseas for over a year now, and still get taxed by Uncle Sam. According to Deloitte & Touche (accounting firm), the USA gets theirs regardless. I have a deal where my company makes sure I'm only personally out of pocket for the same amount I'd have paid in the US, but still getting taxed like a madman.

With that said, there is an offset allowed, so that if you are paying taxes directly to a foreign government, you report that to the IRS so you don't get double-billed.

To the OP, don't know about the middle east. In Asian countries, you have to have a sponsor, and you have to have a skill set that can be explained as not readily available from the local population. In other words, they want to make sure you're not taking a job that one of their nationals can do.
