Tell me what cell phone to buy

I've had a 3G iPhone for over a year now, and while I like it, I'm god damned sick of the outrageous cost of the plan. The girlfriend and I are also thinking about ditching cable TV as well, but I've got to have the Speed channel for my racing fix.

It seems like all the other carriers are doing $49.99 unlimited plans.

So even breaking my contract (ends Nov of this year) and buying a new phone (selling iPhone) I'd still save money.

    What say ye?

Something that runs Android, and try to get something made by HTC. I just got a G1 about 3 weeks ago, and I fucking love the thing. Best phone I've ever had, and best OS on a phone ever.

Jailbreak your iPhone - it adds tons of new functionality, 3rd party apps, and free Applestore apps as well.

Put your phone on Tmobile. Otherwise the man is right an Android phone is a good idea. I am probably finally gonna switch after using Palms for a long time. The new Nexus looks cool. I like having a phone that isn't so common though, hate Iphones cause of that.

i got the motorola droid, i love it, and i used to have an HTC phone that ran windows mobile, no complaints on that either, although i had a very early version of windows mobile, which seemed a little lacking compared to the droid, but that was 3.5 years ago.....so thats a given

It really all depends on what you plan to use the phone for the most. now a days the devices are really good at catering to your needs.

i love the Android devices. you can unlock their full potential of customization by rooting it, but even in stock form they can be really enjoyable. however if you get stuck with a last generation device i.e. G1 or MyTouch 3G you should get ready to deal with the headaches that accompany the underpowered hardware. if you plan to get an Android device shoot for the Nexus One or Droid if you MUST have a keyboard, you can even try out the Samsung behold II i haven't had any first hand experience but seems solid.

Non android HTC devices are also good but come with a higher price tag. the Touch pro 2 runs for about $300 on a new contract. it is a really good phone if you are looking for a all in one phone. it has the ability to run ms powerpoint/word/excel and a bunch of other features for the CEO on the go, it is kinda bulky which is my only real complaint. i would personally wait a bit longer till the HD2 comes out as it should be a nice handset.

Blackberrys are a very solid platform. they probably have the most well rounded lineup of handsets of all the previously mentioned brands. they are relatively affordable and you can have a good model no matter what service provider you choose. they are great for business and have a decent APP store (BB App World) so they can also be fun for more recreational use. i would recommend a model that does not have a trackball but instead the updated track pad. the track balls are very prone to messing up. the Bold 9700 is the ideal.

i currently use the 9700, no real complaints so far. solid device, aesthetically appealing (down right sexy IMO) and stable. i used to have a Mytouch 3G and it was fun, it got a lot better once i rooted it, think of it as having a stock e30 is fun but having a chipped one is better. EDIT: more like a turbo e30 because you can end up losing a lot of reliability if done wrong.

working at t-mobile has it perks i suppose. any other questions??

I've got a rooted G1 that I love. Saving up for a Nexus One. You should too.

Jailbreak your iphone. Give the finger to AT&T, and go to Tmobile.

To be honest, I'm over it. I like the UI, but the new OS that was designed for the more powerful 3Gs has made my phone slow/laggy/unresponsive.

Horrible idea. Tmobile has worse 3g coverage than att.

You should go with either a Motorolla droid or a Nexus One. To be honest though, anything you get is going to be a downgrade, even compared to the 1.5 year old Iphone 3g.

Keep the Iphone and jailbreak it. Then use it with T-mobile. I spend about 65 a month with data and unlimited msgs. I know at&t charges bodies for service on the iphone. You'll save about 40-75 a month.
