What can China do to retaliate against the US? Embargo? Yeah sure. China needs to sell its products to the US.

But I found pretty curious the following statement:
"...the U.S. government is bound by law to ensure the island is able to respond to Chinese threats."

Has Taiwan become a US territory and we didn't know it?
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

Lee, Taiwan is not a U.S. territory. We have officially (along with the rest of the world) recognized Taiwan as its own country separate from China, and have long before Bush was President. We along with much of Western Europe have strategic allegiances to them that cannot be broken. (Think if Germany decided to take over Luxembourg because they thought Luxembourg was really just a wayward part of Germany that tried to break off. It's kinda like that.)

Besides, why wouldn't we want an ally in a volatile part of the world to have a credible chance of defending itself?
