    Cold War Russian "plane" devlopment

Looks like a plane but "glides" as an hydrofoil boat. It works on ground effect over water.

They were tested on the Caspian sea. One of the inventors then went West and open a company in Florida that produced smaller planes following the same technology.

It's different from a hydrofoil. Probably not as stable. Very cool though.

isn't that flying in ground effect? i remember hearing about that during aero class. Also I think the computer animation of the white/blue aircraft towards the end of the bond song demonstrates ground effect.

I saw a one-hour documentary a year ago. The "planes" were huge. They were intended to carry tanks and army personal accross small seas in record speeds. The principle is based on ground effect.

No longer stock ride height, rolling as low as a daily driver in New England should without worrying about breaking an oil pan.

Actually, it was a certain R3V member who strongly believed that a jet on a stairmaster couldn't take off...

This is the russian plane I would be worried about, rather than a fancy boat. All though said boat is cool.

Brand spanking new Gen 5 fighter/bomber, they plan to sell (I would bet to the Chinese, Iranians NK, and prolly to Hugo)

The flight went successfully meeting all task assigned. “In the course of the flight we’ve conducted initial evaluation of the aircraft controllability, engine performance and primary systems operation, the aircraft had retracted and extracted the landing gear. The aircraft performed excellently at all flight-test points scheduled for today. It is easy and comfortable to pilot”, - said Sergey Bogdan.

Compared to the previous generation fighters PAK FA possesses a number of unique features combining the functionality of both attack aircraft and fighter plane.

The 5th generation fighter is equipped with brand-new avionics suite integrating “electronic pilot” functionality, as well as advanced phased-array antenna radar. This significantly decreases pilot load and allows him to focus upon completion of tactical missions. New aircraft on-board equipment allows real-time data exchange not only with ground based control systems, but also within the flight group.

Composites application and innovative technologies, aerodynamics of the aircraft, measures applied to decrease the engine signature provide for the unprecedented small radar cross section in radar, optical and infrared range. This significantly improves combat effectiveness against air and ground targets at any time of the day in both visible and instrument meteorological conditions.

“Today we’ve embarked on an extensive flight test programme of the 5th generation fighter. This is a great success of both Russian science and design school. This achievement rests upon a cooperation team comprised of more than a hundred of our suppliers and strategic partners. PAK FA programme advances Russian aeronautics together with allied industries to an entirely new technological level. These aircraft, together with upgraded 4th generation fighters will define Russian Air Force potential for the next decades. Sukhoi plans to further elaborate on the PAK FA programme which will involve our Indian partners. I am strongly convinced that our joint project will excel its Western rivals in cost-effectiveness and will not only allow strengthening the defense power of Russian and Indian Air Forces, but also gain a significant share of the world market”, - said Mikhail Pogosyan, Sukhoi Company Director General commenting on the launch of the flight test programme.

Too bad no one is going to be able to afford more than a handful of those. However, we happen to have almost 200 f-22's and hundreds of f-35's on the way. Hooray for a 600 billion dollar a year defense budget! Not to mention the fact that we have had stealth technology for 30 years and Russia is just now testing it's first stealth plane. Yeah, i'm not worried.

Also, I highly doubt North Korea, Iran or any other country for that matter is going to get their hands on any of those. It will likely be subject to similar export rules as the f-22 and f-35. Hell, we wouldn't even sell f-22's to the Aussies. Russia knows that North Korea and Iran are off their rockers. They don't want them to have stealth technology anymore than we do.

UMMMMM China has lots of money last time I checked

Hugo has tons of oil, he will just trade more of it to the Russians for them (they have already entered into a mutual beneficial oil agreement 2 months ago)
                      Iran Oil money again
NK ehhhh yeah sure mini asian Elvis will just starve his people more to buy a few

Besides the Russians variant of everything has always been way less refined and way cheaper that the USA version(eg.. mig29 Vs F15....... Mig25 fox bat Vs the F111 or F14). They believe in large Numbers of decent equipment rather than a fewer ultra good pieces of equipment
