    teen driving lessons

My boy just turned 13. He's the only member of my household that genuinely likes (or even tolerates) my E30, so I took him out onto a dirt road and taught him how to drive a 5-speed. Kid stalled it once, then picked it right up. Drove around for half an hour. I think it would be fair to say he was jazzed about it.

thats awesome, i remember doing the exact same thing with my dad. It was a 5-speed chevy blazer though. Stalled it the first time, but got it right on the second go. must be one of the best things about being a father, or a son

All my first driving lessons were driving a 79 ford truck in reverse with only side mirrors, the rear window was covered. I probably ended up putting as many reverse miles as I did forward.

First "lessons" were in a parking lot when I was ten. Other parent (divorced) caught on and taught me to drive a 5 speed at 11. Couldn't do it very well, but by the time I was 13 or so I was pretty good at it.

I'm glad I learned to drive so early on, it really let me focus more on traffic etc when I was learning to drive on the road.

My Dad did the same thing with me. 10-12 I drove "regularly". Roughly every month or so he'd take me out to practice. By 14 I was driving illegally. Mostly shuttling my buddies disabled Mom because she only has full use of one half her body, so it easier since I knew how to drive. I still remember running errands for her with my buddy in their at the time new Suburban at the age of 14

            Fun stuff.

Always start them early. It makes them better drivers if you put a bit of time into showing them what to do, and what not to do. Hell, I taught my friend how to drive stick after my Dad showed me.

I learned a while ago on a Mini Cooper S. I picked it up first thing didn't stall. I stalled the second time when i was learning how to start from a stop uphill.

I grew up on a small farm, was driving the lawn mower by 4 or 5 and the farm beater truck by 8. old 5spd ford, could not reach the clutch well so I kinda learned to shift without the clutch.

Yep. Old Datsun pickups didn't require any clutch usage once you were rolling either. Rev matching FTW.

my dad taught me a lot, it was a blast, but once he gets his permit he should do Street Survival. I think they have it in multiple parts of the country, that is where i learned everything though:)

Awesome man, I'll never forget my pops teaching me how to drive a stick on his 944. It's the little things like this that make life so awesome. Just a few more years and you'll have to get another e30 in the family. Congrats.

My step dad tossed me the keys to a shitty 86 eta and let me figure it out on my own.
