**********the only mac I would buy is a macbook air, which I wish I would have gotten because I upgraded my laptop so much it was only a few hundred more.

Seriously, get whatever the fuck you like using.

Both have their place or else the other wouldn't exist.

      These arguments are so tired.

          all these arguments are beat to shit, but heres my point of view;
pc's are like db bumpers, the ppl that like em, are those stuck with them.

i personally love my mac, sure initial investment was higher, but i haven't
had the need to upgrade, or do anything to the computer the two and half
          years i bought it.

A mac is a pc with an nice chassis and mac os x installed, oh and with a diferent keyboard.

It has the same components so for me it's the same, but i don't like laptops anyway

nothing apple makes beats a phenom quad core and a ati 5970 which is what you could buy with the price of an apple.

Have you used Linux in the past 2 years? Probably not seeing as how you made a comment like that. I set my girlfriend up with Ubuntu on her laptop, she has very little computer skills and has no problem doing anything with it.

Take advantage of a stable, high quality platform that isn't vulnerable to the internet bullshit and crappy operating software quirks that PC's are plagued with, AND use whatever shitty version of Windows Microsoft comes out with next!
Okay, so pay a massive markup for hardware just so you have OSX, and then on top of the enormous amount you just spent you also want to drop a couple hundred more for Windows so that you can run your usual software inside of OSX? Man, that's a pretty expensive system you are building..

FWIW, I just ordered a Dell Studio 15 yesterday. I kind of wanted to go with a Macbook Pro, but the poor screen resolution and significantly higher price were prohibitive (I'm like Blunt, 13" was not enough for me). With the Dell I got:

                      2.26 i3
                      4 gigs ram/320gig 7200RPM HDD
                      512mb HD4570
                      1080p 15.6" LED backlit screen
                      The 9-cell "extended" battery
Backlit keyboard, dual-band wireless-N and bluetooth

All for $1030 out the door. Not a bad deal. The cheapest refurb'd Macbook Pro 15" was like $1570 out the door I think. They've got the nice near flex-free unibody chassis and built-in 7 hour battery, but that's a lot of extra coin. If they had offered a 1080p screen and I had the extra cash to blow though, I probably would have gone that direction. That touchpad is pretty sweet, and with the gestures it makes everything pretty easy.

All you need to know is this

PC owners try mac's and never go back unless forced to by work
Mac owners never, and i mean never, go back to a PC cause the OS is shit

as scott mcneely of sun said its a fucking hairball OS that just keeps getting bigger and hairier

Get the MBP if you can afford it. Yeah, they are a bit more expensive than a similarly spec'd pc, but the reliability/refinement you get with a mac is well worth it.

One thing that hasn't really been touched is the 7 hour battery life. While all of my friends with PCs are tied to their power cords and always searching for outlets, I get to enjoy a truly portable (cordless) experience.

Also, most PCs have really loud fans and run hot (which gets distracting during lectures). I can't even tell when my mac is on because it's always silent.

Not to mention, most 1k pc laptops have cheap, plastiky cases that you can hear flexing whenever you pick them up. The MBP feels totally solid and is very well put together.

All of the little things (and big ones mentioned by others) make the MBP totally worth it IMO. It's way more than just a 'pretty package'

Well I was looking for a lap top. I was hearing the mac was the way to go from some and pc from other I just wanted to get a bigger idea of what I should get. I am a pc user and am more used to it, but when I use a mac i like it. I just dont want to buy a lap top that I will hate. I am actually just starting up my general eucation in hopes of transfering to a uc or cal state in the future. I am studying sociology, well in a debate between bothe soc and psych, but it's still to early to actually tell. The other reason I asked was because IU will be writing a lot of papers and wanted something that was more user freindly. I am still debating and dont want to want to spen money on something that I dont want later. I really dont know what linux is like I probably said or if I didnt I am not computer savy I just use the damn thing. I even have trouble typing fast lol.
