A big Bronco fan myself, but your Scout is very nice too. And in tip top shape. In all honesty, I wouldn't modify it, just clean it. Keep the original paint, just polish it.

Nonetheless, you can increase performance simply by putting back a bigger filter casing that takes cold air from the nose, currently it breaths warm lean air.
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

The color and condition of the paint is one of the main reasons I consider this Scout such a find. Whatever Scout I ended up with I wanted to paint this color, so I got very lucky. I can't wait to see how well it polishes up.

What would you recommend as a replacement air filter? I knew the current one was a terrible option and I was planning on doing some research but haven't got there yet.

I suggest you check in the K&N inventory as they have a huge selection of round filters. You will probably have to make your own sealed enclosure with a side intake if you want to draw cold air from the front of the car, or perhaps reinstall the original casing.

I can't imagine how warm the air can be under the hood when driving around town.

Very nice find. I have four of those beasts (none of them as nice as yours, yet) but I love them. My 1980 Scout is a Traveler Diesel and the 1973 is ready for paint and assembly. Try to locate a stock air filter assembly, and if need be you could run a hose forward off that. K&N does make a drop in for the stock air cleaner. I agree with 33's, but you'll need some sort of lift to run them. There's a lot of info online on these things. You'll find that everything (except rust proofing) was done overkill. Fully boxed frame, medium duty truck engines, Dana 44's front and rear, etc. Your 1980 has the highly sought after Dana 300 transfer case too. Parts are readily available as well, so don't let that scare you when the parts counter guys say "I don't even list it". International sourced a lot of mechanical stuff from other manufacturers, so no worries there. Great on line community as well.

              Good luck.

Man those things are nothing but piles of swiss chees looking sheet metal here on the rusty coast. Envious of cars that remain in the PNW some times.

                  Nice ride.

Every time I see a Scout, all I can think about is John Clark in Without Remorse. If you've read the book you'll know what I'm talking about.

                    Such a great looking vehicle!

                                I had a '76 Scout II.

Miserable pile of shit, but DAMN that 345 had torque...when it ran.
