Lowes vs. Home Depot... FIGHT!

Time to put this to bed once and for all. Vote or DIE. Here's my story on why LOWES KICKS THE SHIT OUT OF HOME DEPOT.

So, for about the last 4 years or so doing various types of telecom, low voltage, and cable work, I've been using one of those large square-ish tote bags for all of my tools. It finally just got too damned full, I'm sick of having to carry the damn thing all the time and not have my tools at hand, and all the rest of the guys I work with use the hip bag rigs and say they're worlds better, so I decided to upgrade tonight.

So the first place I went to was Home Depot. In their gigantic section of tool boxes, totes, and bags, they had ONE full size set of electrician's tool bags and a few smaller totes. The belt was thin and didn't seem very strong, and the bags didn't even have very many dividers in them. So I drove around the block to Lowes. Lowes had 2-3 different full size rigs, and a ton of smaller individual bags. I found a set with a super padded belt, one large bag with a ton of dividers AND a drill holster, and picked up another full size bag to go on the other side, all for $69.99, which is the same price as the one full size rig they had at Home Depot.

This seems to be what happens every time I go to both stores, for just about whatever I'm looking for. For some reason, most of the time I got to Home Depot first thinking I'm going to find it there first, and then wonder why I don't always just go to Lowes first.

I go to Depot for actual building materials, and Lowes for just about everything else. Power tools come from Amazon.

I go to my local hardware store. I don't support those big box places if I have a choice. I get better prices and the guy there actually cares enough to listen to any project plans, and makes sound, quality suggestions. And he knows what he is talking about. The options you've given, the employees don't even understand when you ask if an adapter or component is OSHA certified.

The issue is you went to Home Depot OR Lowe's for Electrician gear ;)

We don't have a local one anymore, or I'd probably go there. We did just get an ACE Hardware tho, and that place is the SHIT.

And while I would LOVE to have the Klein electrician's rig, even the smaller one is like $140. :shock:

Very true! Affordable is very, very subjective when it comes to Klein stuff. I went all out my first year and a half as an electrician and since I've been "laid off" for nearly a year and a half now, it almost seems a waste. I should probably get rid of some of the higher priced items. Although a lot of people probably don't understand the difference between wire pulling/cutting pliers and the standard ones much less why they cost me almost $100.00...

We have a great local hardware store that isn't a chain- McGuckin Hardware. Kicks the shit out of Home Depot AND Lowes for everything except building supplies. It's more of a hardware store instead of materials supplier.

Any Coloradan anywhere near Boulder will agree.

As for the poll, the local Home Depot-tards don't know what a nylock nut is, so my vote goes for Lowes.

McGuckin is the tits for a lot of things. They have an amazing selection of..... Everything... I'd pick Home Depot for building supplies, and that's just cause I don't think we have a local Lowes.....

Home Depot because they are close by in the city. Every single Lowes is at least 25+ miles away from me.
