Indeed. I plan to take much more care when tightening down wheel bolts from now on. I got lucky!

Definitely. I kept thinking what would have happened had the wheel come off while I was driving at 60+mph. Would not be pretty

I've had it happen to me on the interstate, one lug finally snapped and I almost swerved into a tractor trailer.

I always use a torque wrench on my wheels. I had a wheel come loose on my old bronzit back when I was 16, never again!

I've never had a lug bolt come loose. Didn't realize this was so common. :?

Listen guys. I've changed COUNTLESS sets of wheels on my personal cars let alone customer cars. NEVER have I used a torque wrench. NEVER have I had a wheel come loose.

I have this fear every time I had to mount and dismount my wheel for what ever reason.
Although I do stomp on the wrench with my foot in a downward force when I cant tighten it with my hands anymore.

when i started working at a tire shop it was a big fear of mine to have a wheel fly off after putting it back on. But after using an impact and getting into a rhythm you stop fretting over it, and I never once had an issue. Same goes for my cars using the supplied lug wrench...

Glad to hear you avoided an accident.

this happened to my on my 1998 volvo S70, (the sedan version of Janderson's car)... After changing rotors and pads I was rushing to clean up. Tightened all bolts to snug with a socket wrench, and then torqued them all to spec. Apparently I forgot to torque the front left (still don't know, but I thought I did). I was driving around a turn the next day (picking up parts for the e30 :D) and it sounded like a REALLY bad wheel bearing. Pulled over and all but one lug of the front left wheel were loose...

That'll teach you to double check.

Something like this happened to me too. I hit a large bump and maybe 30 miles later, my car started to make weird noises and I felt some front end vibration. Pulled over and checked my lugs to make sure it was not them, and sure enough, a few were loose. I guess the bump made them some loose, but not sure why that would do it.

The really scary part is right before it started to vibrate, I was passing cars going around the uphill part of a mountain pass in the rain at like 60-70 (in the passing lane, of course).
