    Anyone here scan police radio?

For as long as I could remember, I've wanted a scanner. I picked up a Pro-83 on RadioShack recently. Holy shit I am addicted. I figured it would be cool to have around just to find out what's going on when I hear sirens and other shit. Nope, I listen to this thing constantly. I've already bought an upgraded antenna, and now I'm looking at the Pro-106 so I can go digital. If I had the money for it, I'd have already bought it. Anyone else?

They are listed online, and some of them are even broadcast by amateur radio operators online, but it's much more convenient to do it at home with your own handset. On trunked systems, you can choose which talkgroups come through, thus cutting down on shit you dont care about (the trash guys, for example). Portability is also nice. I carry my radio in my car and will listen to it while I'm driving once in a while.

Apparently having one in your car here is a misdemeanor.

i used to have the old style ones that you could pick up portable phones with too. you would be listening and try to figure out which neighbor it was.llIIRC they removed what ever was allowing you to do that from them now.
                  :(

Are you sure there isnt a stipulation to that? In California it only becomes illegal if it's used in the commission of a crime to evade police.

You should be able to pick up older cordless phones, but all of the new cordless phones are digital and use encryption, and as far as I know analog cell phone frequencies have always been blocked. That's starting to change though, with the death of analog cellular service they're starting to reband some channels, which is another reason why I want to get a newer scanner.
