Anyone ever play in a flag football league?

I joined a league late last week. Our first game is in 2 1/2 weeks. I have a pretty good feeling we're going to get our asses handed to us.

If you've played, what level of preparation is apropriate? Should we have defensive schemes or just play man coverage?

Our game is 8 on 8 flag football with teams as large as 20 players. Right now we have 11 or 12 players - all of which are very athletic and in their lower to mid 20s.

Play man. Then when you get exhausted 6 minutes into the game, play zone. Then when you get scored on more than the local whore, you may retire to the showers, where you can vent your frustrations by lathering each other up.

I just got done playing. Getting old and slow.

What we did was play man and had one safety. But for man to work well you have to have a team of guys willing to admit they can't cover someone if they really can't.

Yeah, no one will have a problem with that. We play flag football amongst ourselves and have no problem announcing our weaknesses. If someone gets a big ego they will get benched.

Good idea about the safety. I guess since the center isn't an eligible reciever no one needs to cover him if you aren't blitzing?

No, I don't play flag football. Nor was I aware there was a league for pussies.

Oh, I guess you play in the other types of football leagues?

Enlighten me, manliest of man - what exactly do you do that allows you to pass judgement? Or are you just one of those people who plays it safe and criticizes everything while doing nothing?

I was just busting your balls! Sounds like fun, but the first half of what I said is true, I had no idea they offered it. A lot easier on the body and you still get to be competitive.

On what I've done, I did Akido for nearly 2 years awhile back, boxing for a year when I was 13-14, Judo from ages 6-9. I've been looking at maybe getting back into something else, but just haven't had the time.

How hard was it to get into a league? How often are games, etc??

When we play , we play tackle, but its at the beach, so harm done when you get slammed into the sand.

I play flag football in a 5 on 5 league. What you need to do is put your most athletic players on the line to rush and let the less athletic play zone.

The more pressure you put on the QB the more INTs and defensive turnovers in general you'll have.

I play both side of the ball and over 10 games I've caught 19TDs, ran in 6 and threw for 6. On defense I had 13 INTs with 4 turning into touchdowns, and when they moved me to rush in the last 2 games I had 8 sacks.

As far as schemes go, on defense we had 5 different zone coverages and a man to man set up. A lot of the zone is just a high low alignment. The important thing to do is to switch the defense frequently so the opposing quarterback doesn't know what's going on.

On offense, just get your playmakers the ball short and let them run it. If there is blocking allowed, run lots of screens and pitches, use the sidelines then come back with deep posts and the like.

I played 4 years in high school, I went to a private Academy. It was fun enough, I played defense and was Captain by default senior year even though I cared little about winning. We usually played a 3-2 zone for defense, thats about all I learned about the sport.

There's no blocking really - only screens and picks. But I agree with you - most of our pass plays are going to be less than 10 yards. I think every play is going to have a fake handoff/man in motion.

Thanks for the info though. I wonder how much different 8 on 8 is?

You'll probably have a 3 line man, 3 WR and a RB and a QB.

At least that's how I'd do it.

Option plays, with play action splashed in might be an efficient strategy.

This will be very effective, we use a variation of it as well. Its a killer.
