Seriously, though, Microsoft has done a ton of research and incredibly important work in the computing field. Apple did a lot of important work in GUI research in the 80's, and then basically nothing since, except hiring a designer to "develop a brand".

Don't buy into the hype bullshit from either company.

Considering the mp3 revolution came well after the 80s (relevant to our life times) then I think doing "nothing" is a pretty unfair statement.

Inventing the mp3 and revolutionizing the market are completely different. The market share and 3rd party support that the iPod enjoys is unbelievable. That is definitely something.

I'm not saying that the iPod isn't a great device. It's just not a revolutionary one. The sole reason it gained market share in the first place was because it was the only one that people who owned Macs at the time could use without jumping through hoops (native compatibility, etc.). Then, it gained traction because its competition was fragmented, and now you buy an iPod because it's popular.

It introduced something already in production to the popular market and was very successful. I'm not claiming to know all of the history, I'm simply stating that apple has indeed been busy.

Here is another example, the iPhone was nothing "new" per say. (multi-touch an exception???) But by teh time the 3g came there was nothing new at all, yet this was the first time I heard everyone around me start clamoring for something with "3G!"

Apple's marketing is impressive, and their products are good (enough) to back it up. You can't say a growing company hasn't done anything since the 80s....

go look at the total return of MSFT and AAPL for the last 10yrs
Microsoft has done very little original anything, they have been brilliant marketers of less than cutting edge tech
and the fact is that Apple has been running circles around gates and ballmer for a long time

Hrm, I recall Microsoft AND Apple ripping off the GUI from Xerox.

Face it, good artists innovate, GREAT artists steal. The only thing Apple has to stand on and support them are the cult following of Apple users who would gladly pay money to be walked all over by Steve Jobs.

BTW I'm also a apple user (Iphone 3GS) and the ONLY reason I like it is because I hacked the shit out of it on day one.

Windows 7 beats the shit out of OSX, and frankly Apple could use a real wakeup call if they ever want to be taken seriously in the business market.
