    Portable recording, iPod touch?

    oh hai thar

so im trying to figure out a small conundrum, and i figured why not ask the chaps on R3V what they thought no?

anywho, simple situation really. im trying to get into the habit of recording my sets (live and bedroom) when im DJing, and i need something small and portable to do so. theres a device made my M audio called the "Microtrack", similar to an iPod, its used for portable recording, but its about 200 bux

now, ive had my eye on the iPod touch for quite some time, and i figured, if theres some way i can record on that, then i can have not only a portable recorder, but also wifi, apps, a personal music player etc for around the same price.

ive heard rumors that the newer ipod touches have a line in, which can be used with a microphone for voice recording etc, if this is true, then i could basically plug the ipod into my mixer whilst playing, and use an app to record, simple

so what do you guys know/think? all you ipod touch owners on here, any insight?

i havent seen an ipod with an audio-input, but either way you do not want to use an ipod touch for that. get a cheap digital recorder. you can get a simple one for less than an ipod touch.

i still gotta look around, but id like to stay twoard the higher end recorders like the microtrack, but i figured since i was in the price area, the itouch may be able to something similar, and have way more options.

im gonna get an itouch eventually, just trying to see if i could kill two birds with one stone

2nd-gen ipod touch has a mic input integrated into the headphone jack... i used my blackberry earbud/mic combo to make VOIP calls from iraq.

I have an app on my iPhone done by Sonoma Wireworks called "4-track". It may work on some generations of the iPod nanos, but you may need to plug in an external mic.

It seens to work pretty well for the most part and even has a built in EQ and compressor. It cost $10.00 thru the app store.

oh yeah i forgot the 1/8" jack doubles as mic for things like headsets. mine has a built in mic. OP, you must know/care somewhat about music since you want this to begin with, pleeease dont seriously use an ipod and some app to record your music! i have a very nice boss 8 track digital recorder that i got for less than 300 dollars a few years ago. now there are tonnns of digital recorders, ive seen lots of portable ones that are small like an ipod too. look around man

nooooo i hear ya lennon, theres no way id use anything that wouldnt get the best quality possible, but i figured id ask to clear up some questions i had, and to see if it was possible if the technology has gotten to the point where it can be done on an ipod

like i said, at some point im going to be getting an ipod touch to upgrade from my nano, but if i need to purchase a digital recorder, then thats no problem. figured if i could do both with the the ipod that would be bad ass, but oh well, no worries

              thanks guys :)

wrong. i bought a 2nd-gen ipod touch when they came out in september of 2008, right before i left for iraq, and like i said my blackberry headphone/mic combo worked with it for VOIP calls.

The R-09HR is the recorder my dad has and it's about $300 shipped. I think it's an amazing deal. Using it myself for recording violin by just setting it in the room I was playing in not far from me, I found that it was quite excellent with even just the on-board mics. Naturally, it has Line IN and Mic inputs as well.

ZOOM H4 is what you want. Combination XLR-1/4" Inputs. Done. Lots of podcasters radio guys use this when on the road. The internal mics are bad either. $225.

It also functions as a nice input for cubase. People who use them - love them.

for what it's worth, my experience with zoom's products have been less than great. that's only based off of guitar pedals and other effects type stuff though. and not cheap stuff either. i wouldn't buy anything zoom personally, but maybe their recorders are okay.
