USB Hard drive not recognized anymore with vista

Google cant even find a solution to this problem. So I have a WD portable hd - Passport I think it the model. It used to work fine. I'd plug it in and it would show up. Now I plug it in and nothing. Not even a restart fixes it. On my laptops tho it still works fine so I know its not the drive. Could I have turned something off? I'm running Vista with all the latest updates.

Perhaps you could "repair" the starting blocks on that HD with a repair application.

I had luck with uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, from the makers site. Also, change the drive letter from the default, go with something like Q instead of F, G, H, etc. being as that usually denotes flash drives in most computers.

control panel : administrative tools : computer management : device manager

then unplug and reinstall the usb drive. if you see anything new pop up, right-click and choose "reinstall driver"

i'm working from memory here, because i went back to XP last year after getting sick of vista, but try that.

Turns out the USB cable was too long.

ah. yeah, external drives are sensitive to voltage level if they don't have their own power source. glad you got it working.

Me too. I had a ton of work documents on there that I saved so when I quit I cant do work on the side.

Ever hear of USB drives not working on 1.1 ports? I was reading about if this was the problem (it wasnt because everything is 2.0 on my system.)

                          Do what Farbin said.

If Google cant fix it, NO ONE CAN.

glad you got it fixed... i was actually gonna say it could be your drive letter that may be conflicting with it, but it wasn't. just an idea for next time...

i was going to say try a different USB port, that would have been my first attempt. Since it works on the laptop and doesnt on PC, sometimes USB ports can get lose and connections are no longer maintained.
