    engineers get ITT!

Well In a couple of months I am going to have to start applying for colleges. I really want to go into engineering and just wanted to see what you guys do and what you majored in. I was leaning towards mechanical or aeronautical/aerospace. Share your stories

I go to Texas A&M. Great engineering school, good college town, great career center, big SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) chapter, They have a Formula Hybrid team, build a Grassroots $2010 Challenge car, great car club, etc.

I visited Michigan State University this week for a suspension design seminar, and it seems to be a good school as well, with a great Formula SAE team.

I'm in engineering for cars, but I've gotten a lot of exposure to things like gas turbines, the oil & Gas industry, military contractors, etc.

If I were you, I'd check out any school that is in the results (http://students.sae.org/competitions...eries/results/) and see if they have any more programs that you're interested it. Look at the engineering faculty and their research areas. Check out the towns. How far are you willing to go for a good school?

      Right on.
The world has enough fucking accountants.

      MechE senior about to graduate..

If you WANT to enter engineering, then you might be good. It's usually the directionless hacks that pick engineering on a whim that don't make it past the first 1-2 years.
Just beware that you're getting yourself into something very different from the usual "college experience."
      But in the end..

Just finished my first year at New Jersey Institute of Technology as a ME major. I like my school, its a tech school so everyone is on the same boat, its not like attending a liberal arts college and going into their engineering program.

If you want to do it, do it. You will get your butt handed to you the first year, but its fairly easy if you have interest in it and make time to do the work.

Engineering FTW! The possibilites are endless as one ;)

Eng students do not get to screw around at all! You are usually on a block system and have to stick to it. If you don't like calculus go home. Be ready to love math.

I graduated May 09 with a BSME from Virginia Tech and I work on these.

I wear jeans and a tshirt to work and solve problems. I can say I really enjoy my job. I wouldnt say love at this point. Plus its real blue collar without the snooty professional environment.

I'm graduating BSME in about three weeks. Like stated, if you are good with calc, the rest is nothing too difficult.

i just finished my junior year in mechanical, its definitely interesting stuff but you may be envious of all the business majors.. you have to put in your time.

I met one of the engineers for the SR-71. It's insanity that they used a slide-rule to make that thing (no fancy computers yet) .

I will be finishing my Junior year as an M.E. today.

Also consider MET (Mechanical Engineering Technology) if you want more hands-on/bit less math.

3 of the 4 ME's where I work (including the supervisor) are all MET grads from OSU.

Graduated last June with a BSME from Kettering University, formerly General Motors Institute. I co-op'd with BMW manufacturing, but just as I was ready to graduate, the automotive industry was at it's low and they weren't hiring. My last term I dropped my automotive courses and took environmental classes instead and now I work in the environmental industry reducing power plant emissions.

                            +1 on VT for MechE.

Engineering jobs can either be really cool or really damn boring. Don't be naive, business people run the world. Most of the time you can expect to get screwed over by the marketing/sales team, promising stuff you can't design at cycle times you can't meet.

Once you are in the field it becomes quite obvious who the people are that knew what engineering was and had no misconceptions that you would be designing the next SR71. The cool jobs are definitely out there but in order to get them you need to bust your ass in college and make as many contacts as possible. Internships/coops are indispensable so look into starting one as early as you can so you have an opportunity to work at a couple companies for more than just 1 summer.

Another item is the fact that most companies are not looking for the classic dorky engineer anymore, they want somebody that has some people skills and some business knowledge.

Way too many MEs in this thread :p

I started out wanting to go in the ME direction in highschool but as I got through the community college prerequisite years and started looking closely at what an ME job would entail after school , I wasn't happy (you'd be working for Boeing most likely and I didn't want to relocate) I went the direction of CE and finished up my BS at a local college (St. Martins)
