LOS ANGELES—As Saturday's Tour of California time trial wound through downtown Los Angeles, a crowd of reporters and photographers gathered outside a hospitality tent, where the action on the course was barely visible.

The small scrum had little interest in the charity the tent was designed to support. It had come for an appearance by the man who has become the talk of cycling in recent days: Floyd Landis.
Thursday, a series of emails sent from Mr. Landis to cycling officials and sponsors detailing his own doping and claiming that the practice is common and widely condoned in the sport were made public. The emails, which were first reported by The Wall Street Journal, claimed several other riders and cycling officials participated in doping, including seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong questioned Mr. Landis's credibility and disparaged the allegations Thursday morning before racing in a stage of the Tour of California. He later quit the race after a crash.
Mr. Landis has said little publicly about the emails or what led him to send them. Saturday, many in the cycling world expected Mr. Landis to make a public statement at the race. Instead, he showed up in casual garb, mingled with sponsors and friends and didn't take questions from reporters.

The tent was closed to the public but onlookers loitered outside, some staring at Mr. Landis and others taking pictures. When the time trial ended, more people clustered around the tent. One person yelled an insult at Mr. Landis, expressing anger shared by many in cycling over the charges he has made.
After his appearance, Mr. Landis, escorted by several security guards and police officers, was whisked through the crowd, disappearing into downtown Los Angeles.
Mr. Landis won the Tour of California in 2006 but his Bahati Foundation team hadn't been invited to ride this year. The time trial was won by Tony Martin of the Columbia-HTC team. In second and third were Dave Zabriskie of Garmin and Levi Leipheimer of Radio Shack, respectively -- riders Mr. Landis alleged doped. Neither rider has responded to the allegations..
