TV nerd, need some LCD advice, (purchased a samsung)

So I ended up picking a Samsung LCD 32", 720p, 60 hz because I've been looking to replace my 27" zenith tube in my computer room. I have a PS3, but don't own any blu-ray's.

Here's the deal. I've been watching some of the HD channels and I don't feel that impressed with the picture, which I'm pretty sure is from the 60 hz. Right now I'm watching the NBA playoffs and just the overall picture is a little grainy for me. I was expecting this with the 60hz. The close up of the players on the bench looks sharp, but the actual game is grainy.

My room isn't big at all it's about a 10x12 or something around that, I actually feel that the 32" is a little big. When I'm on my PC, I probably sit about 5 feet from the TV.

Here's my question. My mom is a sams club member and right now, they have a 32" Vizio 1080p, 120hz LCD that she can get for about $400, which is $50 cheaper then the samsung I bought at best buy.

How do the Vizio's compare to the Samsungs? Should I return my Samsung for the Vizio? I know Samsung makes some of the best TV's, but I know mine isn't the "baller" model.

What is the exact model you purchased?

The Vizio with 120hz and 1080p will make a slight difference in picture quality.

This is not because of the 1080p performance feature, if im not mistaken all HD TV signals are just 720p.


The 120hz aspect will definatley reduce image tearing and jitter. The picture will also be more smooth overall during fast motion sequences.

Sitting 5 ft from any HDTV is too close..


A 32 you need to be about 7 feet from the screen to get the full effect of the screen quality.

Also how much did you spend? I can give you some suggestions on Samsung models within your price range that you may be more satisfied with.

Yeah I know 5 ft is a littl close, I'm in the process of purchasing a small peice of furniture so I can be a little further away.

The model Vizio I'm looking at is SV370XVT

I think I may take the Samsung back for the Vizio. The reviews seem good online for the Vizio. I mainly want to do it for the 120hz. I think I would benefit more from the 120hz since I watch sports.

Plasma is out of question because of size, $500 was my budget.

Well you have a 2010 model so that is good, but you do have the absolute bottom of the samsung line.

at a $500 budget, you wont be in the range of any 2010 model with 120hz, On the Samsung line

Any 60hz panel will look subpar from that distance with fast motion on the screen

Also, make sure you connect you HD box via HDMI, its idiot proof and with most cable boxes will auso sense the max rez.

on that note, if you are using the same box as with your previous TV make sure to set it to HD quality.

He is right, what kind of cable programming do you have. Have to get HD otherwise it will look bad, even worse than a regular TV with analog. Thats why we didn't upgrade all the TVs in the house, cost too much to get the boxes and pay for HD.

Heck, take it back just to save the change. It sounds like a better tv also. Vizio is a USA company. I'm not sure about build site, but some engineering has to be done here? Right?

I swapped out my cable box for a HD box and I have an HMDI connection.

I think I'm gonna go ahead and return the samsung for the Vizio. It seems like the better deal to me. I'm not looking for a high end LCD in my computer room anyways.

Any other comments?

I purchased a 47" Vizio, 1080p, 120Hz. I personally love it. My Time Warner box, flips from 480p, 720p, and 1080i based on whatever the broadcasting station is transmitting.

I've talked to a few people who've had vizio's and love them. I thought I could survive with the 60 hz, not the case.

Looks like I'll be returning the samsung for the vizio.

hz is just the amount of times the screen 'refreshes' itself per second. This has nothing to do with the graininess of the picture. The reason it looks grainy is probably because your sitting too close.

Here is a breakdown of hz and how it affects your viewing. TV is filmed at 24fps, or 24hz, so that means there are 24 frames per second, and the tv is flashing 60 times in a second. since 24 cant be devided by 60 evenly, some frames are shown for 2 flashes of the screen, and some for 3. since 120 can be divided evenly by 24, 5 times, each frame the camera records flashes 5 times because the screen is flashing 120 times per second.

All hertz does is give the picture a slightly more linear 'flow' to it. its not going to change the graininess of the picture, its very doubtful you can tell the difference. On a side note, 120hz or 240hz and so on makes no difference in viewing, its just bigger numbers they can put on the boxes to make it one tv seem better than another. Oh, and those instore demos are bs.
