    What are you using?

I have the Snake River in my backyard, it's been pretty quiet this season so far, but I've been having luck with Velveeta and corn.

I always had good luck with a Swedish pimple (yes the Ice fishing lure) on a Carolina rig for steel head when I lived in MI. Have not been fishing in a very long time though.

A good bait caster rigs is what I always use for salmon, a good ol fasion Shakespeare Ugly stick (cheap and REALLY TOUGH) and a Shimano Calcutta, Or the current Corvalus loaded out w/70lb Berkley nylon braid. But this is old school set up, thats good for big river fish, for bottom fishing and drifting for Big salmon, cats and carp, or even the occasional sutrgen . That Ugly/corvalus rig will run you about 140 bucks riged out and ready to fish.

I swapped out to Quantum reals and St Croix or G.lomis rods. But you are talking 4-600 bucks per rig when you go to that level. I just dont have the time any more, sold my boat years ago, and still have enough in tackle to buy several e30's. Wish I had the time.

I say if you are just starting out, and don't have much/any gear, go pick up a ~$40.00 complete setup from Wally-World or some local sporting goods store, rod/reel/tackle kit then you can supplement it when you start to see what does and does not work for ya.

nice, i was thinkin bout getting a cheap setup from walmart or something but i wasnt sure if it was mostly crap im not gonna need. i figure im really only going to catch salmon in rivers and wont get the chance to go out into the puget sound or any lakes much so i dont wanna buy extra shit. but yes pics will definately be taken if i succeed.

anyone have reccomendations as to what should be done with what i catch. i have a buddy with a large smoker but never tasted home smoked salmon.. any good?

freshly smoked salmon is probably amazing, I've only had the stuff that comes in a box.

Filet it and grill or smoke it, either way is great, even the white horse suckers (I dont know if you have those over there though) are great smoked so long as you dont nick the mud vein in them while cleaning them.

Make a little step up from the wal mart combo gear, you get hooked up on something of size its all over.

                  here one of these reals
                  Shamino

this Abu is a good option too

and a original Ugly stick in heavy or even extra heavy

the reals will take some time to learn on as they are bait casters, that will birds nest on you but once you learn how to use them the control you have of both casting precision and control of the fish on the line is SO MUCH BETTER and OH so worth the hassle of learning how to use them. This set up will put you back no more than 150, and will be much more reliable. The ugly stick may be cheap and ugly but for what you are going to be doing with it (not that much casting and working crank baits) the loss of "feel" from the glass over graphite is not going to make a shit of difference to you.

As far as tackle, just some 1oz lead, sinkers, some big off set hooks and a couple of 3way swivels and you will be set

If you plan to smoke it, get some good quality smoking wood. Don't use some crap lumber or anything. I've seen people do silly stuff. There are DIY's for how to set up a regular Bar-B-Que up as a smoker.

Make sure to follow the rules on Salmon, there are tagged ones, and some with clipped tails that must be released in some rivers.

Here are the rules for your state.

From fly-fishing for bass and trout on freshwater lakes and streams east of the Cascades to trolling for salmon along the coast to crabbing in Puget Sound, Washington offers a diverse and unique outdoors experience.

Used to go fishing at a pond in my moms neighborhood, been fishing there for almost 20 years, now some new assholes bought the property and wont let anyone fish there. Color me pissed, i know those fish like the hand on my back.
