Absolutely love them - the absolute Godfathers of electronic music. Didn't so much break the mould as smash it to pieces. Without them the music scene would be a much lonelier place.

Big fan of Devo, their earlier work was produced by Brian Eno (another Godfather). Still follow Mark Motherbaugh's solo work, he's done a lot of the soundtrack work for Wes Anderson's films.

Funfact - I used to mix "Girl You Want" into The B52's "Private Idaho" in another life as a DJ. (I can't claim credit for this genius mixing, I totally stole it off Soulwax).

        Clarity.
No question for me. Where I was and what i was doing in 1998, there is no question. This album at that time in my life meant everything. I lived in Va beach and was promoted, but in order to accept the promotion I had to pack up and move to Dallas, Tx in a week. I did, and I moved with no questions. This decision shaped my future, my career, and the way I live my life every day. This album was there every step of the way. There are very few things i have kept with me throughout my life. Number one is my POW bracelet. Number two is this CD. I have the original one I bought the Tuesday it was released. I bought it in Richmond VA, and it is so scratched, it will not play. It has accompanied me across the country multiple times. It references the good and the bad in my life. But i keep it.
        Yours truly,
        Rich

It's normally impossible to pick favorite music but favorite album is easier - there are lots of bands and music I like but most of them don't have an album I could pop in and listen from beginning to end, a lot of the songs SUCK.

            So by that definition:

I am afraid that unless you actually "lived" a particular musical era, you may have missed tons of these creative and subversive groups that influenced mainstream music or created movements. That's "the good stuff". Lots of music happened outside of "Billboard's" charts. Not that the big and well known groups are bad, just that they are not the "good stuff" in my opinion.

The NewYork Dolls, per exemple, were a 1972 NYC band coached by Malcolm McLaren that laid the foundations for the punk era a few years later... in the UK. Great musicians such as Johnny Thunder, David Johansen, Sylvain Sylvain. Same can be said of Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Velvet Underground.

Jah Wobble of Public Image Limited was greatly influencial of the later trip hop and downtempo movements. He made music with ex-Can member Holger Czukay. Can was contemporary with early Kraftwerk work and influenced all that Brian Eno did for the few following decades.

Hmmm tough question. Probably a tossup between these:

The title says "favorite album," not top ten.

I saw them live at Rock the Bells in 2007... clawed my way up to front and center.
