    Anyone into R/C?

I searched to see if I could dig up an old thread, there were some, but none pertained to this. I have a HPI Savage X and I'm looking at building a Nylon roll cage, built purely for those of us that bash our trucks from time to time.

I was wondering if there were any fellow r3v members that would be interested in owning one. I'm not finished with a prototpe yet, but I plan to have one made in the next few weeks. It will be made from Nylon 6-6. I've used this material in other applications with excellent results. For the mounting to the chassis, I'm looking at utilizing exsisting holes in the chassis plates, or I will fab the mounts for the kit. I'm wanting to keep the price around $100-125 for the cage, which should appeal to most individuals.

I'm also looking at building bumpers, bull bars, and wheelie bars. The cost for these have not been determined yet, I will be more than happy to offer a combo deal on them, with a cage purchase.

I am willing to build for other vehicles, but I will need a loaner for fab purposes.

Can't you buy aluminum roll cages for that much?

I'm kinda into rc. I have a losi mini lst that could use a cage to survive the punishment I put it through, but the speed control fried and replacing that to have a running truck is more important. The other is a tamiya tb02, but that won't really need a cage.

How sturdy is the nylon? It seems like it would flex too much.

Yes, but with aluminum none of the impact is absorbed, it's all redirected to the chassis or where ever it is mounted. The nylon has the advantage of flexing, allowing it to absorb nearly all of the impact.

I'm not trying to claim that you'll be ble to drive a truck over it, but the goal is to allow you to be able to catch some sick air and land it on it's lid hopefully completely unscathed.

The Nylon used is durable enough that grass and dirt shouldn't scuff the surface any, asphault may scuff it a little though.

I plan on building some for the LST series, I know it is considered by many as an upgrade to the Savage.

My neighbor guy has one, with a Mamba Mini in it and it needs one so that will be on the list of future cages. It's utterly insane with the Mamba in it He also has a RC18MT with the same Mamba setup in it, it's ridiculous also.

As for the Nylon, the cage will have minimal joints, they will be bent using heat. It is 1/2" material, so it's rather stiff.

You could say I'm into it...

Or at least used to be. Still have my cars, but haven't driven them in ages. Never owned a Savage, but drove several at the hobby shop I used to work at. IMO, Revo 3.3 kills it, hands down. Even the T-Maxx 3.3 gives it a run for it's money. But it's your car. As long as you are happy with it, more power to ya.

Edit: Note the screen name by the way. :)

I have a savage X but I toasted the tranny 3 or 4 years ago and never got motivated enough to put it back together.

And nitrorustlerdriver the appeal of the savage is not speed or agility, its the durability. I've gone full speed into curbs and driven away without issue.

I also have a TT01 with the ABS tires mod, lol.

My Savage X is equipped with an OS 30 with a pull start, so much nicer without the roto-start. It came with it so I've never driven it with the stock engine.

The nylon has a carbon fiber/graphite look to it, I'm really hoping it holds up to the heating process. So it'll look cool also. I was thinking about possibly using smaller diameter material and building for some crawlers.

Used to be my fav hobby before I discovered wrenching on cars. Been meaning to get back into it. Still have all of my gear, and this thing waiting to be finished (pretty stupid since all of the hard work is already done):
