titanium backup, if you have root. single best app ever

rom manager (if rooted)

swype keyboard, get it at beta.swype.com (no root needed to install)

dolphin browser hd -> looks a lot like firefox if you're used to it

where's my droid -> if you lose your phone, you text it a special phrase and it will ring at max volume even if you had it on silent

I had a jail broken iPhone 3g (still have it if anyone wants to buy :-) ) but have not got into anything crazy with my Eris. Is it difficult to root (I guess is the equivalent term) on the android OS and what are the benefits?

Oh btw I have been using the HTC EVO.

The two apps I recommend to people are:

Wheresmydroid. If you lose your phone and it's on silent someone can text you the phrase "wheresmydroid" and it will start ringing so you can find it.

Handcent. It is threaded texting that puts texts in the order you recieved it not by the time stamp.

Google goggles
Searches web through photgraphs. take a picture and google will find you results

Linphone
Sip phone app. Connected to my voip provider I can make and recieve calls from this dialer which acts as I am calling from the office. does not work well on 3g.... luckily I got 4g

mr. number caller id
Searches a database for names and contact info from incomming calls. will also display last time the number called when incoming. Plenty of other features i haven't messed with yet.

my days
put in when your girl is on the rag and when she is off the rag. It will then determine when she is most likely to concieve or not, and when to not book a vacation. it marks the dates on your google calander.

Printer share
haven't used it yet, but it had good reviews. print from your phone, will connect to wifi printers or network printers once set up.

seattle bus finder
GPS location of certain bus routes, positined in google maps with navigation

shopsavy
barcode scanner, finds best online and local prices on merchadise

swype

qik
video chat with other video chat capable people

urban spoon
locates restaruants and reviews.

happy hour
all food and drink specials in your area, as well as count down timers for when the deals end. can also be set at specific time you plan to be in the area

zombie run
Places zombies on the GPS map and you try to avoid them. you can also see others in your area also running from zombies and meet up and avoid the zombies.

Just a few I haven't seen in here yet:
Handcent SMS is a ton better than the default message app.
Timeriffic lets you set certain times to adjust your vibration/ring settings, I have mine go to silent at a certain time for work, then back to normal ring tone when I get off work, then silent when I go to bed, instead of doing it manually.
Trapster shows you police traps in your areas, but it drains your battery like crazy.
