did you select the components yet? I've been doing a lot of research on this lately. Over the last year I've had 3 different sets of plans but keep getting blasted on the budget. I'm turning to doing DIY motor driver to get the results I want for a reasonable price.. should be pretty cool if I ever manage to buy the parts.

My goal is to keep it light an get a 40+ mile range.Last edited by unrlmth; 07-09-2010, 03:53 PM.1989 325i Alpineweiß II

Pretty solid approach for DC. These batteries seem like a good deal for lithium, the motor on the other hand you might be able to find a better deal but that one ain't bad.
Seems like every month a new site pops up, more options to compare. But the lack of high voltage AC and drivers kind of blows.. this is why I'm leaning towards the DIY approach is I want to do a 480V AC setup.. controller has to handle 600V, even the 300V ones are few and far between. It's dangerous though, I wouldn't try it if not for being an EE with experience in power electronics.
just remember 48v is touch safe, any higher than that be careful and always wear the safety glasses. 200v+ can be arc flash hazard, a short will literally cause the metal to vaporize/explode.sigpic

1st this, now the the Killing of the V10, and the Rumblings of FWD and no N54 available on the next gen of the 1 series BMW is getting to Hippie for me.
What happened to the drivers car?????? An enviro douche smug, I am saving the earth mobile is not a DRIVERS CAR, no matter how you slice it or try to justify itOriginally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

full torque from 0 rpm.
electronic control of each wheel = using torque as power steering, always diverting power where is optimal for where the weight is, infinitely adjustable traction control.
silky smooth.
silent.
fume less.
no warmup time.
no oil to change.
If you want a driver's car, then this is the future. The overcomplicated transmissions, differentials, ABS systems of today are futile attempts to attain what electric control can do right off the bat. Lack of battery options is really a piss-poor excuse when a generator the size of a motorcycle engine could provide the average power you need to cruise at 100mph, more efficiently, more reliably.sigpic

You do relize that at the turn of the 19th century Electric cars and trolleys were more popular than combustion powered right???
Why did they die off, same reasons they still are not viable solution yet today.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

Expensive cars with subpar range and performance, batteries that cause more environmental impact to produce than an internal combustion engine and STILL RUN OFF OF FOSSIL FUELS.
Electric cars are a brilliant idea....................that is once there is wide spread, nuclear power.
I take that back because I don't have the numbers, if turning fossil fuels into electricity and transporting it across the grid is more effecient than producing gas and pushing it through the pipeline to your gas station, then technically it's better.
But still powered by fossil fuels, when we really need to be getting our energy from Nuclear/Wind.Need parts now? Need them cheap? steve@blunttech.com

In reality we gain nothing, but more headaches with slow charges Vs Fill up times, decreased capacity and range etc etc.....sigpic

Originally posted by Wiglaf View PostTotally false preconception. I figured you'd be the first to apply economies of scale to something. A power plant is almost 3x as efficient as the motor in your car, and cleaner too. Plus your car doesn't burn coal or cheap crude, aside from other alternatives like nuclear.
Now multiply that millions of loads over similar hills, all over the country every day, not to mention all the little cars and people movements.
Yes the internal combustion engine is only at best 40% efficient at converting all the BTU in a given amount of fuel into energy, with the rest going to heat and exhaust energy. But untill there is the ability to charge batteries in a car or truck that will yield 300 plus miles to a charge in 5 mins or less and get these things distributed all over to every podunk town in America. Then you have problems with the electrical infrastructure, when in gets really hot the grid and generation facilities can barley keep up with the A/C and normal daily usage. You cant just dump 250 million vehicles on to the electric grid, we dont have the generation capacity and the infrastructure cant handle that load.
The enviro douche bags wont let us build or upgrade capacity of generation facilities, many places they wont let transmission systems be built to get the power from the GREEN shit to market.
So ummmmmm yeah your arguments are still impractical, and will remain that way for a very very long time. Your not going to see Oil fall from the top fuel spot till we are very very old and gray. Our grand kids might, MIGHT see the end of oil as a primary fuel.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.

I'd be willing to buy it for business, I have a little diesel van right now. I've been studying various stuff being sold (not DIY) like veggie, natural gas, LP gas. Each has it's downfalls, CNG is interesting but government taxes make it almost as expensive as petrol, veggie is DIY experimenting and your car has to have old components that'll eat anything, LPG is the only way to go. I could get to half the expenses per kilometer that I have now with the 1.9 diesel. 1.6l or 2.0l LPG volkwagens FTW!
So I think governments and energy companies won't let you drive really cheap. Either the car will be really, really expensive, or energy prices will go up. The only way to fix this would be free energy (see Tesla documentaries), but the energy giants won't let that happen. And anyways, its almost impossible for shipping boats, commercial airplanes and 18 wheelers to go electric (or CNG, LPG for tha matter).
Either way, I would always have at least one other car where consumption isn't an issue cuz the car is so damn fun.

You have already answered your own questions. The governments of the EU are why your fuel and energy costs are so high, The product it self is about the same price all over the world. Its the Taxes that each govt adds to motor fuel that make is so expensive where you live and the subsides the govt toss's in that make it 12 cents a gallon in Venezuela.
Taxes man thats why, anything that can be used to make a car go, that is cheap your govts add lots of tax to it to make it expensive.
Energy companies dont care, they want it cheap, that way they sell more product easier and in turn make more money, as your money buys more fuel, and that lets you do more with that given amount of money. If fuel was 2 euro a gallon I bet you would use more of it, travel more, drive more, and maybe even not have to charge as much for your services with your van, there by making you more competitive. It would put more money in your pocket to spend on other things rather than in your tank and there by the govt pocket.Last edited by mrsleeve; 07-10-2010, 02:39 PM.Originally posted by FusionIf a car is the epitome of freedom, than an electric car is house arrest with your wife titty fucking your next door neighbor.
