The lens have is a Sigma 70-300 built for Canon EOS300.

If I can use it freely with Canon's digi SLRs, then this is most probably the way I'll go. The lens itself was too expensive to let it rot :)

Thanks for all the input (again).

    R3v really delivers.

the lens may use the same mount, but do a little research first and make sure that it will work 100%. i know some film nikon lenses won't autofocus with the dslr.

is that the only lens you have? what's the aperture (look for the number after the "f/"). if it's a high number (4+) and the only lens - then you shouldn't bother with just limiting yourself to canon. it's like saying you're going to buy another honda accord because you have still have weathertech rubber floormats.

i'm not a huge fan of high zoom telephoto lenses, especially those without image stabilization. i had a Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S, and it was garbage. it was slow, shots were blurry, and the high zoom required a lot of lens changing. i replaced it with a 18-200 VR lens, and it's the perfect walk-around lens. don't forget when you switch to the DSLR, you'll get the 1.6x magnification - essentially your lens at the 70mm widest setting is 112mm. That's like walking around with your point & shoot at 3.9 zoom.

if you're concerned about how much cash you spent on the lens, you should be able to sell it pretty easily. check out amazon.com. it's easy to list stuff on there. just make sure you do research before buying photo equipment. talk to people, and see what they use so you don't wind up wasting money.

I find zoom lenses like the 70-200mm F4L Im borrowing is a great lens as far as quality and sharpness but i find myself using that $100 28-80 for composition reasons. I'm more into architectual and landscape.
