I just got back from an adventure bike comparo (3500km around the Aussie outback). We tested the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure, the BMW F800 GS, the Yamaha Super Tenere (1200cc) and the Yamaha Tenere (660cc).
They're all beaut, but do different aspects of adventure riding differently. If you have a lot of single trail to cover, look at the 660 Tenere or the 800GS. For stuff that has a lot of tar/transport go the R1200. The KTM 990 is also another great bike in that class, but isn't as good as the R1200 IMO.
I work for a dirt bike magazine, so we're around them a fair bit.Pork Hunt Motorsport

Sounds like a great ride, QC to South America. My dad's coworker has done two transcontinental adventures. Once- From Finland to Brazil in VW T3 Van, the other on a Beemer from Finland to Morocco; forget which model.

2003 KTM 640 Adventure. Rode this beast down in Baja and all over Nevada.
Had a Renazco couch, Leo Vince, Precision Concepts suspension, Rear Woody laced wheel, GPS, plug for heated grips and vest. Reliable and easy to work on. There can only be one best Adventure Bike, this was it. And 7 gallons of fuel for long distance off road riding.
