It is probably a dirt track race car. Cheap, and popular.
Besides, did you know the first gen. Neon does VERY well in motorsports? Still does well on the road course, and used to be the car to have in its class in Auto-x.
As far as FWD cars go 1st gen neons are basically the equivalent of e30's. Cheap, easy to make fast, and very easy to work on (except timing belts, but thats the same as e30's).

qft. If I wanted a FWD car as a project car it would have been a neon.
Of course, it was an e30 or an S13, and my e30 popped up on craigslist at the right time.
neons dominate on autox, of course people here would refuse to believe that.

1st gen neons are garbage. Cheap, break a lot, and timing belts are twice as hard to do as an e30. By no means are they equivalent to an e30. Come on, your comparing an old bmw to an old dodge.
