Top 5 Rappers Dead or Alive!

I always like having this discussion...and it really just comes down to which era of hip hop you grew in. I'm only going to name solo rappers and not groups. So here's my list.

    1) Jay Z (Say what you want but he's the only consistent rapper to ever release hit after hit after hit since 94) His first album (Reasonable Doubt) is no doubt the best album EVER! He's lyrically one of the best, very witty, and can change up his flow at any time making him versatile (unlike Jadakiss).

    2) Tupac (Probably the realist rapper ever) He had the entire West Coast behind him when he got into it with Biggie Smalls. Was not afraid to call out other rappers in his songs and dis them. Again, the realist rapper ever. Tupac also had alot of range, not only could he get you pumped up to go into a moshpit ("Holler if you here me"), he could also make you call your mom and tell her you love her ("Dear Mama"). Favorite Album: All Eyes on Me

    3) Nas (Arguably one of the best lyricist) His debut album, Illmatic, is also one of the best albums in hip hop. He followed that up with It Was Written which was also a classic. Few of his albums were not up to par but overall he's creative and music always tells a story (missing from today's rappers).

    4) Notorious B.I.G (Hands down King of Hip Hop) I would have Biggie higher on the list but unfortunately he did not have a substantial discography. First rapper to really bring the "Player" into hip hop and rapping about Versace and Poppin Bottles. Not only that, but seems that no one argued with him as being the King of hip hop. Everyone respected him. Best Album: Life After Death

    5) Eminem (Yes, Eminem) He threw a wrench in the game with his style of rhyming and lyrics. He caught everyone off guard and has two of the highest selling albums (Marshall Mathers; Eminem Show) of all time. Just about every feature he's done he's dominated the other rappers on it (including Jay Z). Best Album: Marshall Mathers

    Honorable Mention:
    6) Big Pun (no argument here, BEST LYRICIST) No other rapper achieved so many songs and features in the short amount of time he did it in (fact). Was also the first Latin rapper to go platinum (Sorry Fat Joe). Favorite album: Capital Punishment

    7) Lil Wayne (Like it or not; lil wayne will be around for a while) He is by far leading the new school of hip hop. Every track he's on, every mixtape he puts out, he's definately holding it down. His rock n roll songs aren't bad either.

    Top 5 Best Rap Groups:
    1) Wu Tang Clan
    2) Beastie Boys
    3) OutKast
    4) The Roots
    5) The L.O.X
    Honorable mention:
    6) Clipse

Let's here it, agree or disagree, let's talk hip hop.

^^^^^Too many rebels without a cause.

Just for personal culture, I suggest you listen to 1970's Last Poets. They "reinvented" rap (it indeed started a few decades before) when hop was not hip, and black peoples had battles to fight. Not just Gold Overdose.

    A good album is "Chastisements"

This topic is about rap. If you have nothing to contribute, perhaps you could start your own thread about what you like and share your love of music. I think we have enough of Reelop19 and the likes, expressing hate all day long.

I'm not sure I could disagree with the Top 5 you have there. I might knock Eminem off for Talib though.

However, I would definitely disagree with the mention of Lil' Wayne. His lyrics/raps are nursery rhyme shit. His beats/songs, however, are pretty sick. His voice/swagger is the only thing that keeps him "in the game;" that and high school retards.
I think Eminem is the opposite. His lyrics, syncopated tempo, and rhymes are amazing. His songs, however, suck ass. I think it's the studios that force him into that radio chart-topping shit.

I'd add Andre 3000, and Common to the Honorable Mention list.

        Hip-hop acts I've seen live:
        Wu-Tang
        The Roots x3
        Cypress Hill x2
        Nas
        Talib Kweli x2
        Mos Def
        Blackstar
        Public Enemy
        Common
        NERD

          Nobody mentionned Snoop Dogg?
I the 1980s, Public Ennemy and DelaSoul had good stuff too. I find great that beasty Boys are still there after close to 25 years.

BTW I prefer West Coast over East Coast.

              You make a valid point:

I thought this cover is amazing, Jay-z honestly is the best of them

              Eminem has major talent.

50 cent has good lyrics that are not full of shit.

Dude, sometimes you just need to shut the fuck up.

Best rapper ever? EVER? I am gonna have to say the D.O.C.

Dre said he was easily the best he had ever known. He dropped an amazing CD WAY back, who knows what would have happened were it not for the crash. He spent many years strung out on drugs but finally has a voice again.

Second? Krizz Kaliko. I like actual content to my music, so guys like Blackalicious, J5, Digital Underground and even Tech Nine are my kind of shit. I do listen to Lil Wayne (hell, even Lil Jon sometimes) because a good groove is OK too...but none of those guys except Eminem is worth a shit in my book.

I would have to put Ice Cube on the list somewhere though. Too much good shit to ignore.

                    Closing SOON!

That's why i said it depends on which era you grew up in. I was born in the 80s and didnt get into hip hop til i heard a Kool G Rap tape...then was really into Naughty by Nature.

I dont know, i like Talib and Mos Def but they're conscious rappers. So they're kinda limited in that regard. I have to stand up for Lil Wayne because his lyrics may not be profound but his delivery/style and constant metaphors entertain me. It's also pretty funny. But i can see your point.

Hmm, good call. But while Doggystyle is definately one of the best albums, lyrically he's just very basic. I probably should've gave him honorable mention though...
