When you state "And the model:", do mean a rapid prototype model? We have a few RP machines at work. One FDM Titan, two Objets and a ZCorp
3-D Color Printer. Those things are cool.

        bringing back from dead

The company I work for has always done 2D drafting for doors, windows, etc. Just got promoted. I've been working at my job for about 3 1/2 months now and I'm now the project manager for my company's ENTIRE 3D project that stretches among 3 departments and including 12 people. Showboating a bit cause I have no previous experience and no degree ha. This was using AUTOCAD 2012
Here's how I got it. This is what I brought to the meeting where the CEO was present along with the VP of marketing.

Hopefully the meating went well, lol.

And your attachments aren't working. But keep up the good work... sounds like you like it and are a good employee.

Also, is anyone using CREO 2.0? We just upgraded from Pro/E Wildfire 5.0 to CREO 2.0 and I am liking it so far. It seems like they are moving towards having a more intuitive GUI similar to SolidWorks. Now I see zero advantages that Solidworks has over Pro/E (CREO).

The FEA package was just installed last week. I've only played with it a little bit so far, but I really like it. It is far superior to Cosmos in SW, and is the best one I have used that isn't a dedicated FEA program.

I also just interviewed and have a job offer from Amazon Web Services to be a Quality/Process engineer with some small design responsibilities. I used to be gung-ho about using my degree to be a design engineer, but this job opportunity is just too good to pass up. I'd be traveling all over the world (primarily Asia, Europe and Australia) to suppliers to perform FAI's and make sure that they are complying with quality processes. Like I said, I'd love to stay in design, but $85K/yr, great benefits and stocks that are 100% vested immediately in Amazon is really hard to pass up. I would also have some design input, so it isn't a complete departure from design.

As soon as I pass the contingencies, I will inform my current engineering manager that I have an offer and give him the opportunity to keep me there. He'd have to beat the $85k salary by at least 10-15% though as Amazon's stock options can be quite lucrative. I get profit sharing that equates to 6% of my annual salary now, but that doesn't touch what Amazon is offering.

Needless to say, I'm pretty excited about this offer, but it looks like my career as a design engineer will be pretty short. I'm going to miss 3D modeling a lot... I wish I could afford to buy a legitimate Pro/E license to use at home.

gah dang I wish I had that opportunity on my plate. If you don't mind me asking, what's your age and how long have you been in practice? IMO I'd still take the Amazon. Travel while you can and have fun with it, especially if it's on someone else's tab.

I like this thread. I use SolidWorks every day.

I'd be real interested to spend some time with CREO and compare it to Solidworks.

TwoJs, don't let your current place match, fuck it and move on. Some times you have to say yes and go for it.

Slaterd, congrats on the new opp, keep working hard!

Well, if they would beat Amazon's salary offer by 15% I would seriously consider it. It isn't as well as I thought I'd be doing when I was going to school, but being over $100k/yr after profit sharing at 26 is pretty good. My current employer is a great company to work for, I really like the people I work with/for, it is a design engineer job which is what I've always wanted, and I have very good standing -- my designs are looked upon favorably by the big wig execs in the company.

But, I doubt that they will give me what I want. I'm only at $65k/yr right now, so I don't know if they'll give me close to a 50% raise. Also, I'm relatively young and single, so the travel that comes with the Amazon job is really attractive to me right now. If they do offer to meet my demands, it will be a really tough decision.

I'm newly 26, and I've been out of school since June '10. But, I've only been a design engineer for 6 months. I had a couple of legal indiscretions in the past, so I found it difficult to get a job I wanted right out of school. No experience and something of a "checkered" past meant that I had to take an "engineering tech" job and prove myself. I will likely end up taking the job at Amazon... like you said, the travel involved is a big upside in my eyes. That and it is a great company to work for and have on my resume. But, I've still got to get past teh contingencies... I'll pass the drug test no problem, but I hope they can overlook the legal issues from 3 or 4 years ago.

Hey guys I need some measurements. I need as much measurements you can get involving the kidneys and grills. I have the headlights but NO IDEA WHAT MEASUREMENTS TO PUT THEM! I sold my e30 a while ago and don't have something to work off of. I just started a half hour ago with some spare parts lying around.
                        so far...
Actually if you can give me AS MANY measurements as you can do that would be greatly appreciated. I have the rough meas. for the chassis but specifics do help a bit.

I've been keeping this a close secret on here. But I suppose I might as well let the cat out of the bag here before I really get the ball rolling.

Working on a little project ;)

Also, TwoJ's. Congratulations! I wish that I started school earlier and are making the kind of money you are now. But, this is my only life. Can't regret it. Always look to the future!

I wanted to have an actual finished model before gauging interest.
And yes. Still working on what I want to put on there as a logo though. I'm hoping it will be something people will want and will pay the price for. It won't be cheap to have made.
