Even though I've been listening to and playing extreme metal for a bloody long time, I doubt I could ever try to explain why I listen to it or what it's appeal is to someone who doesn't listen to it. What I will suggest however, is that you look into the documentary "Metal: A Headbangers Journey". It's good enough to be a film that can be enjoyed regardless of whether you like metal or not, and provides a lot of good insight to the genre and the people.I'm open for suggestions for sure.
I guess it's the extreme screaming metal that I really don't understand/like. It just sounds like a super fast power chord on a double drop D tuned guitar and a double pedal roll.
Don't get me wrong, I totally dig hard rock. In fact, Rage Against the Machine is one of my all-time favorites (saw them live in 2007). I've seen Tool twice as well.
At the moment, I really listen to a wide variety (no country or stupid Katy Perry-esque pop). My most recent purchase was NERD's new album. The most recent concerts I've been to are The Roots, Norah Jones, Talib Kweli, and the Oregon Symphony. I had tickets to see The Black Keys when they were here last month, but I was in Germany at the time. Like I said, wide variety haha.
Now, I'm just going to link some songs from a broader spectrum of the genre. If you don't find anything you like, then thanks for being open minded and having a go, but if you do, then good on ya.
You've already said you like Black Sabbath. With a lot of the bands active at that time, it can be hard to find the line where hard rock becomes heavy metal, which also makes it a fantastic cross road for people who are willing to take a look into the genre. Groups like Motorhead, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are all bands that have had a massive impact on shaping heavy metal and no doubt, anyone who listens to metal will have heard these bands at one point or the other. However, the band I'm going to link you is....Black Sabbath. Most people will have the albums Black Sabbath, Paranoid or Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, but have you looked into the Dio years, where the band really changed their sound? Ronnie James Dio is one of the best vocalists to ever grace the stage in a metal band and if you enjoy this, I highly suggest also looking into Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and (the band) Dio.
As well as being the first metal band, Black Sabbath was also the first band of the Doom subgenre. Doom is, like many of the early Sabbath songs, very slow and often blues based. It's grown massively over the years to the point where Doom bands can be all be quite atmospheric, relaxing, heavy or even depressing. I imagine you'll enjoy this song, because Electric Wizard is, in all honesty, just pure Black Sabbath worship.
Candlemass is another classic doom band with a more traditional vocal style.
And finally, Katatonia is another excellent starting point to the genre. Whilst their first album was a pure death/doom album, they gradually progressed to a more rock based sound that I actually quite enjoy at times. Definitely more accessible than a lot of the other bands in this thread.
Anyway, I'm going for a drive and then the V8 Supercars are on later today, but I'll come back to this if you like.
Cheers.Comment

Thanks! I liked all of those. The bridge in that Sabbath song was badass. The Candlemass video is SOOO B-Grade, but awesome song.

You know what? I m into Slayer and The Haunted and the like, but still every time I get to see Metallica live I m deeply impressed by how tight they are!
In fact even if it s not my fav band,Iafter each show I respect them more and more and more.It s like they re never tired and they always show how much they appreciate their fan base. Its like the opposite of Slayer live shows where they get on stage, play music, create havoc and just leave.
N.
PS.LOL I use the word "like" a lot! hahaYour signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.
