Wanting a DSLR This Black Friday

Okay, so my Mom wants to buy a DSLR this year for herself. She has done eBay for years, and she is finally listening to me and getting a good camera.

SO, she is looking to spend under $800 or so. Nikon or Canon? I know there are trade-offs to both, what are they? Which models? What specs REALLY matter, isn't it true megapixels dont directly relate to clarity?

You should buy her a big purple dildo.

She'll get more out of it. I'm sure of this.

^ Yeah cause every mother needs one of those.

She will be using it for other purposes too, not just eBay. She makes like $1000 or so each month on eBay so she isn't some eBay wannabe

you can't go wrong with either brand.

i prefer nikon, and recommend the d3000 or d3100 for starters. she doesn't need to spend $800. in fact, a refurb d3000 is $300 from adorama, and then she can get the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S lens for a little under $200 (amazon, adorama, or used). that setup will be close to perfect for taking photos of ebay stuff.

if you want to keep it perfectly simple, just get this:

I still think you should grab a hulking, vane'y, suction cup sporting, purple dildo.

Its the gift that keeps on giving!!

Daniel, thanks for taking this seriously. I also want to get into amateur photography, and a D3000 will do fine for this correct? I was looking at the Canon that compares to the D3000, and it has like 4 or so more megapixels, and seemed better across the board?

Just pick one. At the entry level it's all the same shit.

^ and you are probably right. The D3100 seems to be superior to the D40, and I like the pricepoint

I'm a Nikon guy all the way. I have a D80, but that's quite a bit above your pricepoint. The new entry level shit from Nikon is looking good. If I had the extra cash I'd probably buy a D3100 to replace my point and shoot.

If you guys are likely to do a lot of low light shooting, Nikon's mid to upper end stuff absolutely kicks ass. The D90 and a 50/1.8 would fit within the $800 budget. Canon's lower end tends to have more features and be a little less half assed than Nikon's, though.

Really, though, here's the thing: the best camera is the one that you are actually comfortable using. If you guys can get down to a store and play with them a little bit to see how they handle, I'd recommend that. While there are areas in which one will outperform the other, they will ALL take good pictures.

This is what I agree with on the Nikon d3000, ex gf has one, it wasn't too complicated, and still took amazing quality photos IMO.

I just bought a cheap $180 Nikon L110. Even with no light, it makes nice clear shots. If it is for eBay, why spend more? Also, it has a big 3" display. She could get the camera and a dozen fluorescent dildos...

You will always and forever be able to make better images with $600 of lighting behind you then $6000 of camera in front of you. Spend money on being able to make a good image rather then just record one.

a good soft box, flashes, tripod etc...

I would say go for a refurb nikon d3000 or a used d70s

^^^Yeah. I know. But we are not talking about shooting 13 years old nikid prepubescent girls here. Just eBay stuff ;-)

BTW I worked for 20 years as an art director in advertzing, and I agree that lighting is the most important element of the shoot.
