lol @ these responses.
First, I completely agree with the shitty photography comment. RMR's Pikes Peak Hill Climb video was much better. And you can clearly tell they had a helicopter for shots when they clearly showed an opening shot of the hill (although no Genesis was shown).
Second, to clear any nonsense assumptions. Rhys Millen did two runs there. One was to attempt to drift the entire hill climb (shown in the video) and another one he actually drove the car in full traction to post a record time. I cannot recall the record time now, but it's on jalopnik somewhere I'm sure.
Finally, I love how the people make fun of drifting as ballet. I always laugh and get the motorsports metapher, but let's be realistic.... if you fail to smile when your rear end is intentionally sideways, then what are you doing calling yourself a driving enthusiast? Just sayin'....
Drifting competitions are cool because they bring better drifting and better showmanship. But as a measured sport it's common sense that it'll never compare to an objective, time-measured, sure winner motorsport.
This video is a pure strike of irony to me though.... as for the past decade I've dreamed of having a built car to drive at my home country's hill climbs (I've actually recorded myself going down one years ago while going to the beaches).
Not only Rhys Millen goes to my country, to drive one of my favorite roads, but he also pulls it off in one of the cars I currently own. Jealous? Yes, absolutely.
Still a neat video though. Could be better, but totally worth my 3 minutes.

The Ballet part is incredible, amazing driving skill. Not fast, not intended to be, it is all about style. That video was an amazing display of skill to say the least.
Buuuut...just like ballet, it just ain't my cup of tea.
All of the fucking Dbags who seem to think it is appropriate to do full drifts around corners on city streets...well, I don't give a fuck what they like or not. Get your punk ass on a racetrack with that shit, or get a damn buss pass.

I would love to see Rhys rip that hill up, one of the best drivers of our age.

Oh and Luke, I <3 you. Just had to set some stuff straight to make sure people don't take what you posted and ran away with it making dumb conclusions of their own. The only point of making it a sport really (in my eyes) is to encourage people to push harder to make drifting look even better. If it wasn't for competition (as in rivalry), businesses would be garbage. The same goes for motorsports.
But as I mentioned, and I'm sure you agree.... drifting competitions is in no way at the level of a timed motorsport, nor will it ever likely be there.Erick Mahle | FullOpp Drift | YouTube

Did noone watch the videos I posted?
Back in the days of GroupB rallye, the cars were so overpowered they drifted through all the stages. Never seen the Quattros sideways inches from the people?
One of the main reasons they had to keep drifting is to keep the revs up for turbo power. Most of them had major turbo lag issues, so they jest kept revving. Then one of the Quattro models had a supercharger for low end power/torque and a turbo for high end. Noone knows how much power they were putting out, most figures show 400-800whp depending on boost and stage setup.
Drifting is not some 2005 fad for Fast and Furious kids (maybe some, yes). It has its reasons and history in motorsport.
Watch some documentaries.
Oh and there was a female driver in the championship btw.

Sure it's easy to lose traction but to intentionally lose traction and maintain a controlled slide is a whole other game..
I'm willing to bet that you can't post record times or drift at that level, so what makes you think your opinion is even slightly valid?
Finally, nobody drifts because it's the fastest way around a corner, they do it because IT'S FUN....

That Peugeot ripping it up Pikes Peak is awesome. The corrections at the wheel must be hairy when you could just go over the hill to a fiery death.
Rhys Millen is also a legitimate driver. Stop hating.

Not easy to remember all the details on those awesome machines.
Edit: You're right, the Delta had it (http://www.autozine.org/strange_car/strange_60.htm) but I'm still pretty sure the Audi was working with the idea, maybe didn't make it before gB was banned. I can't remember where I heard about that.Last edited by Fusion; 11-26-2010, 03:22 PM.

I rode in a true Quattro Sport, owned by Vasek Polak in about 1989. CF body, HUGE hairdryer, just a beast. Rode north on Macadam Parkway (Portland, Oregon) about 70MPH. Did a U Turn at those speeds...went "fast lane to fast lane" at about 70...un-fucking-real.
Dead flat, tires screaming violent shredding of all senses, just AMAZING capablilty.
God Bless Gruppe B, may it rest in peace.

Reason for sliding in rally = Your tires have massively more fore/aft grip than lateral.
Reason for sliding on tarmac = Fun as hell, but no where near as dangerous as the real thing on dirt, snow, or gravel.
Drifters are a smart breed. Instead of spending all of their money to slide around in the woods competing, they spend their money on their cars and showboat on tracks. Everyone here knows sliding drops panties.
As for the idiots who drift on the street, well Darwin will take care of them soon enough.
