Hey Photoshop/Graphic Design guys, quick help needed!

Sooooo, I just had the president of the company walk into my office and ask me to go through some photos and pick one for a print ad we will be doing.
I've got Photoshop CS5, but have never been trained on to how to REALLY use it.

I was just hoping for a quick tip on the best way to cleanly cut out the background. Which tool to use?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

you mean like cut out a person or an object

use the lasso tool zoom in real close and go little by little. Then invert the selection and delete

that is the easiest, not the best but the easiest

      Quick dirty dirty.

      Duplicate layer a few times.

Hide the bottom layers. Go to top layer. Select: Magnetic Lasso Tool, select feather maybe around 10px. Lasso around object. Go to Select - Save selection for later just because. Then go to Select > Inverse. Delete. Then view a bottom layer (the duplication) and see how it looks. If it's not exactly close enough or cuts off the edges select a lower/higher feather. You don't want jagged edges really I assume.

You can use channels, and other ways but that's the easiest.

Yeah, I've got to cut out the parking lot/building/etc in two photos of some generators.

Just really akward trying to navigate your way through a program you don't really know!

Ouch. People take a full year to learn how to use it. At least one week to understand the basics and perform some retouching that doesn't look "akward". ;-) And every single retoucher will evaluate several ways to achieve a similar result.
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.
