One thing though might be any future use of the ipad for your wife at work. I know a lot of medical software companies (and my company) are eyeing the incoming tablet platforms as another way to get things like medical records into a docs hands.

What company do you work for? We do outsourced IT for small-medium medical offices and are really pushing tablet platforms as exam room/doctor machines with our clients as they move to new EHR software.

Perceptive Software. Content Management. We see a lot of viability in both document retrieval and task operations on mobile devices. At this point most of the new phones are basically computers anyway. A little java enhanced web interface and youre 90% there.

Probably the only thing holding these things back is security. Both Apple and Android are making great strides but I dont think HIPPA compliance is as high on their list as user interface improvements.

Between the two for a gift it really depends on what the user is using it for. My girlfriend wants a device now and likely wouldnt be using it professionally for a while (doing research right now). She also reads a lot of books. So the e-ink technology would be more useful to her than the advanced functionality of the tablet.
