It has a dual mass flywheel that cannot be machined and are known to self destruct.

The 1.8t cars had oil sludge issues due to oil specification issues. Plus vag said you could go 10k between oil changes.

I see a ton of these cars where I work and I cannot believe how much they cost to maintain.

I could go on! We see steering rack issues, power steering pump issues. However when are running right they are fun to drive and great in snow.
I'v been looking around for one of those too, haven't had much luck, plus the ones I found are out of my price range. The 1.8T's have everything behind the timing belt?

I myself couldn't tell you much on the newer and B5 model cars but the now older URs6 Avants with quattro and 20vt is the sure winner. Amazing tuneability and everything you mentioned you needed for the snow. My cup of tea and I love BMW too

LOVE that Avant, but way out of my price range. I would actually love to have an Avant, but all that I've found are tiptronic, which I do not want.

I'm hoping I can find a solid 2.8 A4 that has all the maintnance records for a decent price.

I just don't plan on modding the hell outta this thing, so I think the 2.8 will serve me just fine.

    Sold.......again.

They suck to work on, Audis just do. It's as if they designed the cars to be easy for them to assemble with no consideration to how they're going to be serviced later on. I agree with everything farix said, I'll just add that they seem to go through O2 sensors for some reason, and the xenon headlights are susceptible to theft depending on where you live/park. Steering is way overboosted and numb for me, but that's personal preference.

I'd look into an e46 xi. Probably sounding like a fanboy, but I think it's a better car. Not without it's issues either though. I'm no fan of awd, unless you plan on driving through a blizzard. Four hakkas and throttle steering has always worked for me.

Get a low mileage B6 with a 1.8t and a manual trans. I just sold my avant at 155K and it still ran and drove perfectly. Stay away from B5's.

Go B5 S4, thats what i used to have ;) 2.7t makes a TON of power. its a blast to drive, just watch for high milage stock KO3's. I got mine used in 04 and it was an 01 so it was more than double what a used b5s4 goes for now. So at the price they go for now there is no sense in getting an a4 when the s4 has so much more to offer imo.

86 Audi 4000CSQ Calloway. Locking diffs and unstoppable, but electrical failures galore and Audi's lack of consumable support after 10 years of age.

i sold my B5 A4 1.8T back in March. Bought it new, and put 180K miles on her...and the new owner recently turned over 200K. It had it share of issues, but nothing major. The stock turbo finally went around 170K, but the car was chipped since 9K.

By the time I sold that car, it drove as well as the day I bought it.....no complaints, and def one of the best cars I've owned. I sold it for peanuts imo...

Some issues I ran into during ownership:
-Coilpacks, which are about $20/piece at the dealer
-timing belts HAVE to be done every 60K. I did this 3xs, but fairly easy to do
-control arms & tie rod ends usually wear (although I still had the stock ones when i sold it)
                  -alternator
                  -ABS sensors

Nothing out of the ordinary, but if you choose a 1.8T, def be prepared for vacuum leaks etc. These can be annoying = little to no power. Simple fix, but a pain tracking down.

some pics of my old car to help you w/ your decision =)

                      WOW.

That car looks really clean. I think you just sold me on an Audi

What mods did you do to the car? I'm drawing a blank right now, but what BBS's are those?

                      Thanks

I like the way the car sits with the CH's. How low was it compared to stock? I wouldn't want to lower mine too much becuase I plan on driving it in the snow.
