Think I MAY have found my Audi. 2000 A4 2.8 5 speed Quattro, 135k, just had timing belt and all that crap done. All it needs is a new rack, ABS module, and maybe a tune up. Has a few aftermarket peices but a 2k, I don't think I can go wrong.
Going to check it out tomorrow evening hopefully.
I call bullshit on only needs a new rack.
Go find the rack.
Some retard though putting it where the glovebox is on a normal car was cool.
Mounted like a Dodge Monaco thingy. Its ABOVE the bell housing UNDER the cowl. Not horrible to do but without a lift and a 6' wingspan your gonna hate life.
Me, I'd rather gargle with thumbtacks than do another rack in a V engined Audi. On the 4 bangers you have more room.
I've done a lot more of the pressure hoses for leaks. Again, thats a fun one.
Enjoy.

Haha, we'll see. If anything else, I may just fix the leak, drive the car for a month and sell it. The guy took it a reputable european shop down near him and they put it on a lift and confirmed it was the rack.I call bullshit on only needs a new rack.

I'm an aircraft mechanic, so cussing over taking a bolt out isn't something new for me. The way planes are designed, it's like they built around a bolt or bracket.

I am much to late.Yeah, I thought about getting an ix and putting on H&R sports, but it would just defeat the purpose of an AWD I think. Plus it's hard to find a decent ix that isn't rotted out with rust. I want something reliable that I can use in the snow and take on decent trips to go snowboarding and looks nice.My previous build (currently E30-less)

You haven't done much Audi or late E6X, e90 or e60/61 work have you.
In our shop the E6X cars hold the record for being the most costly to own followed very closely by the V engined Audi's and the direct injection Audi's. (cam eating piece of shit) The Benz's tend to be cheaper than the Lexus stuff to own for the most part. Once MB got past the early 211 debacles and the M272 balance shafts they have been extremely reliable. Service stuff, brakes and ball joints are pretty much it on the later cars.
The later (04 up) BMW stuff is proving to be a electrical nightmare. Especially the E6X cars. The N62 also leaks worse than the 617 MB diesels. The valvetronic stuff has been reliable but overall makes things a shit load more expensive to work on. The software is absolutely insane to deal with.
The direct injection VAG mills are eating intake cams, eating vent system parts, still eating outer tie rods and thrust arm joints, dropping transmissions, require extensive removal of body parts to service, now run electric motor mounts that fail AND turn the damn CEL on, still leak water into themselves drowning the unhappy electrons and have parts cost roughly 1/3 higher than the same stuff for BMW. They also still have cluster, misfire and turbo issues. Not to mention gecko and not being able to code replacement modules unless you are a dealer. Yeah, thats cheap.
The E46 except for the 99 auto is actually one of the best BMW's built, same league as the E39's. The only real headache is the cooling system and caster bushings.Comment

out of all Luxury name brands in the current $4-7k range, audi is not the car to buy. Thats why they depreciated so quickly. I loved my 98 A4 2.8 but after I changed the clutch (1 week and $1400 in "while you're in there parts") and drove it a while but then sold it. I lost my spirit for it after putting it back together.
Congrats on the E46, smart choice and no, it will not cost you anywhere near the cost it takes to maintain an older audi.

Yeah I know. I would have loved to have an AWD, but I just didn't feel comfotable with an Audi. Wasn't really considering an E46, but this one popped up at a good price, couldn't pass it up.Those are cars out of price range.

I loved my B5 Stage ++ S4 (RS6 turbos), the power was relentless. I sold it last March because i really didnt need all that power and i was scared of possible maintenance issues(B5 S4s can be nightmares). I got a b6 A4 1.8, 31 hwy mpg, great stereo, 6spd, quiet, and comfortable. Id reccomend going the b6 a4 route, i sold her in july with 75k miles for $10k.

Current Car: 2011 BMW 135i, M-Sport, 6 speed
