    TV's

Since r3v seems to have deep knowledge of tech, I'll ask this as well.

I need a new TV as mine is both archaic and broken. I'm looking for 32"-37", with reliability and picture quality being the only two things that are important to me.

What do I need? Must I get 1080p or is 720p good? Do I need 120Hz or is 60Hz sufficient? Are the no-name knockoffs(Dynex, Insignia) worth considering or does their quality suffer? What can I realistically get for <$400?

I plan to hook one video game system, one cable box, and occasionally a laptop to the Tv, but that's pretty much it.

Could anyone share some advice? Thank you.

I love my 37" VIZIO I got from Costco, got it about a year ago for 450 or so, I think the new model is much better and a little bit cheaper.

I've got a pretty slick 32 inch flat screen 4:3 ratio tv I could sell you for 100 shipped.

I just bought a 32'' VIZIO for my apartment, its beautiful. I got it at costco for $290.

Some info I picked up when researching my TV :

The Hertz - the higher the number the faster it refreshes. So when your watching football/soccer the ball is always crisp and doesn't have any lag. Mine is 120hz I believe which is on the higher end of the spectrum.

1080p vs 720p ? - Unless you have HDMI hook ups and receive HD channels don't worry about 1080p. The catch is that unless you have HDMI cables your signal can't come in stronger than 720p anyway.

Size? - How much space do you have? You know what you need/want.

Brands? - VIZIO. I wouldn't buy anything else. They are #1 right now and have been for a while now. VIZIOs have their speakers on the front of the display which makes for good sound (obviously). Other brands mount them on the back of the display... not sure what thats about...?

Anyone feel free to add or subtract to my info. :)

        good luck op

I've got 2 dynex and they are great...if replacing a 32~ inch 4:3 get at least a 40 inch. 1080p is a waste under at minimum 40''+ if you sitting over 4 feet away from your tv. I've got a 32 inch 720p and a 40'' 1080p dynex. They are both good for the $$$ but don't expect the same quality as more expensive tvs...but anyways any tv you will get, your eyes will adapt in a few weeks.

the biggest difference I've noticed is when watching standard def, dynexs have not as good picture as compared to an aquos or whatever. HD looks very good.

BTW i'm not an expert so YMMV

but in my opinion, if your watching mostly standard def tv, you will notice a poorer picture initially but your eyes will adapt . 42'' dynex are like 450$ in canada.

Forgot to add, most hd sources, cable hd, sat etc etc are 1080i not 1080p.

On the hz thing, again it depends on the use, its noticable but not a game breaker for me but it might be for you.

That could be true if you're looking in to spending less money. Definitely have seen Samsung, Sony and Panasonic TV's looking better than Vizio. Then again, they all portray the same picture a little differently so its up to one's opinion at times.

I know that its a little over your buget price BUT, I have a 42" LG that i got from brandsmart for 480. 720p, on all the time, emits little to no heat and has yet to give me a prob. It has usb/hdmi/vga/s vid/and norm cable adapters (im missing one or two but dont really feel like getting up to check). Its on around 19 hrs a day too. My dad took the 1080p one and he hasn't complained to me about his either.

Honesty, you get what you pay for but you may be suprised with some lesser quality TV's.

A little over a year ago i bought a 40" Sharp Aqous for right around $780 including tax. The video is great, its been nothing but a wonderful tv. Only downfall is the sound quality, which is pretty much the norm for LCD's.

Two days after xmas this year i stopped by BestBuy and picked up a 32" Dynex for the bedroom. My uncle gave me a gift card, but it was right around $270 out the door w/o my card. Its a pretty nice TV, so far i have not had any issues, however it takes a while for it to change channels w/o the cable box. If i were you, looking to go on the cheap end, i would buy this Dynex again in a heart beat.

I am in the EXACT same boat as far as looking for a new TV is concerned. Looking at Samsungs, LGs and Vizios. In 32" or 37"

My girlfriend's parents bought a Vizio about a year and a half ago and it requires an external reciever for the remote control. As space is a concern for me it pretty much makes me not want a Vizio at all. Is this something they still do?

VIZIO has treated me way more than great. Say what you will, the picture on my 46" VIZIO rivaled that of my friends 50" super spendy Sony Bravia at more than double the price of my VIZIO.

                      Yeah.

So what do you guys think of plasma? Upon viewing some tv's this evening, the image lag on the plasmas seemed to be as good as the 240Hz LED-LCD tv's and you can get a bigger plasma TV for the same money.

the cheaper plasma's are not so good for gaming due to the image burn in, however for movies and such plasma's are hard to beat!

Plasma have a 600 hz refresh rate so they are great for games and sports.
