    T-mobile G2 or MyTouch

These are the two phones I am looking at, and I am not looking to switch providers. Already have a Samsung Vibrant on another line, but it's got it's minuses (no flash, 3g only, usb only tether) so I want something a little different and came to these two choices.

So, if you have either the G2 or MyTouch can you confirm the following:

    a) how is tethering working for you? are you paying the $14.95 a month fee for this?
    b) is it rooted?
    c) how is video playback? how often does it not play something or crash?
    d) does the landscape mode work on the g2 ok for you?
    e) can you uninstall or upgrade the apps pre-installed on the g2 or not?

And finally, what do you like and not like specifically about it?

    Thanks!

The vibrant is also wifi, connects to my home 802.11g/n router but it's not a 4g phone like lets say G2.

I spoke with Tmobile, and it seems that even though Android 2.2 offers wifi hotspot, they must be locking this option out and are charging an additional 14.95 a month to enable it on top of the 30 a month for unlimited... WTF right.

Ya... I just looked it up they lied to me bastards. The wife and I were going to get the mytouch when it was buy one get one. They talked us into the vibrant. the vibrant was free but they tried to make them sound the same.

I've been with tmo since 98 and even when they let me upgrade early for a full upgrade price it's never even close to free lol.

The vibrant is a nice phone, I just want something faster WITH wireless hotspot and not USB. The guy i talked to has the mytouch 4g and co-worker is on vibrant, and another on g2. So it was nice to try all 3 and then read/view bunch of reviews. Nothing wrong with vibrant, it's screen is killer... the only thing I don't like about it is no wifi hotspot only usb (correct me if I am wrong) and no led flash (and no inline flash, but that should be fixed with 2.2)

I did speed tests from the same location back to back on g2/vibrant/mytouch 4g and the new motorolla cliq2 and there is a big difference in download/upload speed.

I just need some confirmation if the g2 is rootable or not, there are reports that it gets temp root only...and if you are using wifi hotspot on it successfully.

I have a rooted vibrant and I'm in no way shape or form disappointed with it. My sister has the Mytouch and the phone itself is awesome but damn that shit is a heavy brick, F2F vid chat is awesome to have though. that all I have to say about this.
Looking for a 3.46 or lower LSD. Lets make a deal.

Jean, you don't need to pay for tethering. They won't know its tethered. There are plenty of procedures online that explain how to do it. 14.95 is for the software they give you to set up a standard windows modem port and so they can get more out of you. I tethered my Blackberry Bold with ATT (same style network) for 2 years before they caught on and it was because I was tethered in Canada and got whacked for 4 gb's of international data charges. And when I was complaining I inadvertently told them it was tethered.

In fact all 15 road techs at work tether their blackberry curves on the same procedure I used (and forwarded to everyone) and the ATT reps said they didn't have a problem with us doing that. Considering out cell bill is 15 g's a month anyways.

I have a g2 and love it. Had the g1 for almost 2 years and it was the first phone that didn't break on me after it hit the one year mark. Internet is pretty quick on 4g and I have 4g almost everywhere I go (Atlanta). Like how you can zoom in like an Iphone with 2 fingers but hate how every web page makes you zoom in before you can even begin to think about reading it. Haven't tethered on it yet but see the option under settings to do so. Don't really use the landscape option much like I did on the g1. I have gotten really used to swipe so the keyboard isn't so much a necessaity even though I break it out sometimes. Haven't used skype on it and I think the touch 2 is setup better for skype being that it has a forward facing camera as well.

Video play back works fine for me. My phone has never crashed on me BUT I do let the battery run all the way out at least once a week and charge it from 0 to help keep the battery from building up memory. I'm sure the new batteries resist this now but its just a habbit for me since the days of racing rc cars and cycling batteries to condition them.

You can uninstall pre loaded apps and it lets you know when to update them. Some you will want to use different ones all together. Love the square app which basically turns your phone into a credit card swiping device.

Overall I like it way better than my g1. Better apps, the internet is much more like your desktop being that smiley's and gif's work where as on the g1 it didn't. You get 7 home screens to fill up with shortcuts if you so choose. EVERYTHING seems to be connected if you want it to be. If I take a picture it instantly uploads to photobucket and I can have it on FB or where ever in seconds. Things I don't like are that it's heavier although not by much. Don't really care for the way you review your photos and videos. Seems it takes a lot longer. I have been with t-mobile as long as you and they have a great plan for people that have been with them for over 2 years. Actually I think it was Powertel back then or something. Anyhow, I used to think I would never own a phone without a keyboard because of my fat fingers but the digi keyboard on this one seems better and I really like swipe now.

How does the WiFi calling work on the G2? I have no reception at home, currently stuck on Verizon for their femtocell but Jesus are they expensive.

i would wait for a little longer to upgrade. moterola and samsung both are getting ready to drop their dual core beasty smart phones. also shortly after them htc will be dropping thiers.
