Well, actually this happened about 3 days ago, but I just hate using my wife's laptop, so I have't been on much since.
Lately my comp has been having serious issues. It began with random lockups every now and then, then they became more and more frequent. The comp began to lock up everytime I watched a .mov video, and then with any kind of video, regardless of the format. Then it progressivley got worse, getting to the point where it would lock up before it even got past the WindowsXP loading screen.
So the other night, I went to do a reformat, and when I started the comp to boot from the XP CD, I hear a most unpleasant sound, a light "kssssss" followed by the faint smell of something electronic burning. I look in the case, and one of the small transistors on the board literally fried. I think what happened is my power supply must have shorted out, and fried the motherboard. It happened to a friend a few months back. That's what we get for buying cheap power supplies, I guess.
My system was running 2 hard drives, a 30 gig for the C: drive, for installs and program files, and an 80 gig for MP3's, videos, games and whatever. Going on advice from James Crivellone, I unplugged the power and the IDE cable from the 80 gig when I started to reformat the other HD and do the reinstall, so I'm pretty sure everything on that drive is ok. It god damn well better be, we're talking 7000 MP3's, a few full lenggh movies, a ton of hi-res of Clarkson videos, and a SHITLOAD of E30 and BMW videos. But since it was disconnected from the board and the power supply completely, it should be fine. The 30 gig, well... we'll see.
I'm going to be building a new system soon, basically a P4 3.0 GHz CPU, along with about a gig of ram and lots of other goodies. It won't be a high-performance gaming rig, mostly just for web stuff, Photoshop and Macromedia, and multimedia, mainly videos and MP3's. Hopefully I'll have it done by the end of June, because I'm going to slit my wrists if I have to keep using this damn laptop...
