Im CA Journeyman Electricain. Ive been laid off for a while I was a lead at my old company. But Ive been interviewing alot this last few weeks, today I got offerd my old job back. But and a big one its not rock solid basicaly I have one petco to do in a few weeks and ill be doing some service calls off and on. Love this company though the only place I fit in because were all younger guys.

Two I just got offerd a lead/foreman Foreman postion that doing grocery chain that offer me a the same pay and at least steady work for the next 3-6months .

I have a family so the wife wants me to switch to the new company but IDK.

Ive also worked for a lot of other places and it took me 6 years to finally fit in.

new company. You refer to back to your older job "because were all younger guys", dont be afraid (not that your are) and or intimidated by the older crowds. Get in there, do your job to the period and you'll gain respect pretty quick. Good luck to ya man. Its hard to find good help now days, show'um what you can do and you'll likely be around for some time. Every company needs a couple of good ol' boys.

They deserve the respect of being your elder, and doing your job longer than you've been alive. You prolly belong with the baggypants flatbillers anyway. I bet you cry if you don't get a brake every 3hours too. I hate entitled employees, you should be happy there is work.

I've been running auto repair shops for years, right out of HS, and had the same issue, I'm telling you, give more than their fair share of respect, and all will be fine.

lol I'm all for respecting people, but they should show him respect too if he can do the job just as well. I know plenty of old fucks who don't do shit and demand respect because they are older. Everyone should earn their keep, plain and simple

I see no future in a 7 employee, 1 owner gig. Sure its nice and kick back, but where are you going to be in ten years ? In a trade like yours, find something that is union, something with good pay, vacation time , sick leave, and such.

My dad became a deep 6 figure VP for an MNC starting for a 7 employee, 1 owner job. The company was very effective and were on the heels of a powerful competitor they bought the company from the owner and took this small band that was outperforming their supposedly powerful teams and made them leaders within the bigger company. That got him into management, he did the rest.

Of course you have to be a BAMF but if you are one BAMF among 7 instead of a BAMF among a 100. And union? Ive never associated "contract labor" with advancement. Actually, that is why pensions have always been so important to unions, because people die doing basically the same shit they started with, just making more. There generally isn't the career mobility you get being independent.
                        Im now E30less.

Im 1 of the last 7 our company was a medium sized 45-50 guys Its just gotten very slow here. In ten years Id probably be a field superintendent for this company. I would much rather work for a small company because they take care of you.

I will never go union They refuse to acknowledge my CA journeyman card because I didnt go into there program which is a bullshit. They want me to start all over again.

there is a reason I work for the small company I do. we dont get shit tons of work, but I get my choice of it. And my boss is both a friend and a mentor, very well respected in the field and has made it clear that I have plenty of room for advancement. Has been mentioned about starting another business and if it happens I will be in Key roles.

That said Opportunity knocks take it, you are laid off right now, and if your normal gig gets pissy about you taking a better offer and bettering your self and position then fuck them.

In this economy I would take the job that has the most work lined out, and if your other outfit picks up more work, then drag up and go back to them. I waited 5 months and turned do 2 or 3 short calls (2ish months) and was 1st rig in on this one and it looks like this will be a good 2 years solid. I am glad I waited for it

I understand where you're coming from.. Just moved from NY to Va because my old company slowed down so much. I'm an electrician too but, non union.

You didn't really post up enough info for anyone to give you solid advice. Look at the whole picture of what each job offers you(I guess since it's union each company would offer similar ones? Not in my case so this was big for me..) Benefits go a long way.. health, 401k, sick days, vacation, do you get a truck? gas, insurance, no wear and tear on your own vehicle.. all that shit adds up quick at the end of each year on top of your hourly wage.

Which one do you think you'll be able to move up in faster and get more pay? If you think both will only last 3-6 months, find out which one will get you more money and milk it for what they got while trying to find a solid job. With any company you work for it's good to get along with the guys but, in the long run just you have to worry about yourself. Be as professional as you can even though it's a "blue collar job" and you'll move up. Other wise you'll be one of those old guys who complains all day they're underpaid etc..
                              The end. Good luck
