    n00b question - seatbelts

I'm pretty sure there's a thread about this on e30 tech, but given that it's still down..I'll just ask you guys :)..

My driver's side seatbelt reciever no longer works at all and the passenger reciever is on its way out... Is this something I can just replace using junkyard parts or something or do I have to get it done somewhere...I guess what I'm asking is is it legal for me to do it myself...since its a safety thing?

Or better yet, does anyone know if insurance companies generally cover things like this? since it's just a defect of the car over time and it's something required by law..

sorry if it's a "dumb" question..I had found some info once before but can no longer get to it

    Thanks!

One electrical connector under the seat and a few tiewraps to cut. One bolt on the side under the plastic cover. because of the difficult access, you will probably have to remove the seat. IIRC there are two models of latch. Must be depending on model year.
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

^ this. You don't have to worry about any legal matters. Should just be a 13mm bolt and a few wire-ties and a connector under the seat. I do recall a slightly different reciever on some later models, so make sure that when you get one at the yard, you het the correct one.

Pretty sure OP is a female...

I say grab a whole new buckle assemble from the JY.

When the buckle on my eta went, I tried to fix it, broke some plastic clip in the buckle mech., it worked but was a PITA to use.

its a 17MM bolt that bolts the buckle onto the seat

if you have a shallow 17mm 3/8 drive socket and a long handle 3/8 ratchet. you'll have no big issues with unbolting the buckle without removing the seat.....hmmmm now that i think about it,for the passenger side you can only use a ratchet to loosen the bolt. once the bolt is backed out to a certain point the ratchet gets stuck between the bolt and the carpet. so you'll need a 17mm wrench to completely remove the bolt.

if you have a 2door e30 just use the lever on the side of the seat back.(the one you would use if you where getting into the back seats)the seat should lift up enough for you to get under the seat and unclip the connector, cut any zip-ties. I believe only the driver side has the belt sensor, at least thats how it is in both my cars.

Good info, but removing the seat would be so much easier. Fuck tiny spaces and trying to do work in them
