I would also recommend an intel based mac. As cool as I think the 970 is, no support is no support, and no new software means it won't be that useful for long. You'd be better off building a hackintosh, if you want to play around.

This is becoming really easy to do with intel based OSX. Both my friends use them for their HTPC.

I was actually going to mention the Hackintosh idea also. Find some guides online and buy supported hardware, very easy to do if the issue is that you just don't like Windows 7.

i had a thinkpad laptop hackintosh in late ..07? whenever x86 osx came out. it was very buggy and drivers were sketchy. I guess all that is worked out now?

I have a buddy with an i7 xeon, 12GB ram, radeon 5770, SSD boot drive hackintosh. that thing screams.

It's the same power you'd get out of a $4k mac pro, coming in in the $1.5K price range.
