    Subaru vs CRV

    Hey guys,

    I need some advice:

Need a new car. Want to pick from either a 2000ish CRV or a Subaru wagon.

    Budget: 2000-4000$

Needs: I just need a daily driver, thats good on gas and reliable. Don't care too much about power or image. I like a bit of space in the car for my surfing gear as well + a roof rack.

I like Subaru, but heard they have a lot of problems with HG (boxer engines no fun) and also rusted out filler necks. Everything in Ontario needs to pass saftey before purchase so I can't get away with too much. I don't have the space nor really the drive to fix anything other then brakes, sensors crap.

    appreciate the advice.

Between a CRV and a Subaru, I would say the E30 is the one to go with.

If lucky, the E36 will die peacefully, in its natural habitat, and be given the prestigious honor of donating its parts to an E30

subaru! My wrx has been great to me, but don't expect it to be any more comfortable than an E30. I actually think there is more road noise in the subaru with stock suspension than an E30 with a bad wheel bearing....

Actually now that I think of it, you should just get an E30, you could probably get 4 or 5 E30's for the same price.

I loved my old subaru; I sold it to pay for tuition.

i would build another one again if i had the money

my e30 was just more affordable at this current juncture

If I had to choose between these two crappers for a daily I'd pick the Honda for better build quality and reliability.

Subaru (subaru guy here). Relatives have a CRV, Subaru is better.

HG issues are only on 2.5L non turbo engines through 2000. 2000-04 had issues as well but far less. Supposedly past 04 the HG issue is completely solved, but 96-00 are worst HG issue-wise.

My solution, for $2-4k? 95-99 Subaru 2.2L Legacy sedan/wagon. All outbacks are 2.5s after 95. The 2.2 has no HG issues and is pretty much unkillable. I've tried, for six years, incl track, autox, and rallyx with no issues motor-wise.

2.2L engine is WIN, 2.5L has more power but HG issues are fail. 2.2 is slooooow though, but good for a daily. Torquey down low.

Definitely get a manual if you can, the Subaru AWD is 50/50 f/r with a manual, 70/30 with an autotragic.

My EX has a '98 Outback sport, been working on it for years. No issues with the car except for the rust. But she had everything cut out and welded in new with paint.

Subaru is over all one great car maker. So is Honda though, they are dependable and CHEAP to replace parts.

we have both. a 2005 crv and a 2010 subaru legacy. Obviously both newer than the models you are looking at. I think the 1st gen cr-v's are the super small ones and I don't like driving the cr-v. Subies are great fun, but I've never had to deal with high mileage ones. I'd try to find one with low miles in your price range.

As an aside, my fiance has lost control in the snow twice with the cr-v. I don't know if it is her driving skill, all season tires, or bad karma. My subaru with studless snow tires goes over the mountain pass weekly without problems.

I want to thank you and the other posters for great information.

I'm know the subaru is great technically, but up here the old ones seem to rust out badly.

The Crv although pretty lame, seems to perhaps have better build quality and may hold up a bit better with higher miles. Although I've heard that the rear diff is a problem? Any Honda experts care to comment.

I'm not too worried about off road or snow performance. But I like the wagon style of the subi. Sometimes I like to sleep in the back when I go kite-surfing for a weekend.
