    Mac Programs

Well, im about to go throught the whole "im going to college and need a laptop" thing. I have always been a windows guy, but my girlfriend just got an iBook and im in love. The gui is amazing, there is just so much eye candy. I also do a ton of photo editing, movie editing and the sort. I know that macs are much better for that kind of stuff. I guess my main concern is if there are enough programs for it. I dont do a lot of gaming any more, I used to be totaly into it but I just play some cs now and again.
Whats the deal with longhorn? Anything that should go into my decision?
Also my other option would be a alienware. I need a ton of hard drive space, as my music alone takes up like 60-70 gigs. Let me know what you think on this issue and what you have done. Thanks.

    I bombed Korea every night.

If you game, don't get a Mac.

I liked the transistion from Linux. I was a hardcore Gentoo Linux kid, and moving to the Mac was nice. Mac gave me the use of the terminal, but it dumbed down the whole feeling of using a true Unix-based system. I use it for web browsing, chatting, and music. It gets pretty typical college-kid use, and it's perfect for that.

I only wish I got one with more RAM.
The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.

      .

Depends on the games, I have Doom III, Rise of Nations, BF1942, Desert Combat, Age of Mythology, Racer, etc that I play on mine.

That's not really true anymore. All of the software runs exactly on a pc as it does a mac.

I just hooked up a 12" Powerbook for $1600 with the student discount through apple.com. I fucking love it.

Built in 802.11g wireless and Bluetooth (great for campus)
768mb RAM (upgrade to 1.25 gigs is like $300 more since you'd need a 1gig dimm because the powerbook has 256 built in)
          100 gig HD
          24x CD Burner
          8x DVD Burner
          - The Slot load drive is the shit

Hit me up on AIM if you wanna know more about it. It's a badass little machine and it weighs practically nothing.

If you're going to be doing multimedia editing, then chances are your school will use Macs for it. But you should probably find out what they're using before you buy one. It'd suck to buy a mac or pc and find out that the department uses the opposite.

What kinds of programs are you looking for that you're worried Macs won't support/be available???

There is a ton of software available for macs these days. The one website that will give you any and all programs you will need: http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/ (Good for Windows too ;))

I work on macs and ever since I hardly ever use windows machines. Learn how to do the terminal thing, it is great to have such control of your OS, but also dangerous.

Definately go with the mac, but might I reccomend a G5 over a laptop simply becuase you will need more power and a lot more harddrive space if you want to do media editing and have a ton of music and such.

One thing to be wary of is that if you have a small wallet upgrading or customizing your PC will be almost out of the question due to premium prices on premium apple hardware. BTW, a two button mouse is a must upgrade, and anyone will do. Apple's cinema display's ARE breathtaking and worth every penny, which is lots of them.

But when it comes down to it, its your choice hope you choose what will serve you best!

All you just proved is that you are a very narrow minded person who does not like using other platforms, you clearly know nothing about mac.

And I maintain a 200 PC, 25 Server Windows based lan across 3 nodes, and i'm tired of using microsoft on a daily basis.

You can easily find OSX Capable apps that are simiar to windows appz.
