Why not just pick up a used android phone and use one of the bajillion music apps that you like and you'll have WiFi and the battery should last a long time JUST playing music and surfing the web. Micro SD cards are pretty cheap these days. $50 for cheap Android phone. then $80 for the biggest SD card you can find (64GB I think its the biggest on the market). There you go.
I have an android phone, but I use my Zune pretty much exclusively in the car. I even made a purpose built dock for it. My phone just isn't set up to work well in a car. Too hard to control while driving and not really any good way to make a dock for it. And I'm pretty sure they only make microSD cards up to 32gb at this point, but even if they did make a 64gb, my phone only supports up to 16gb.

That's my POV also. As much as i'd like to say everything apple makes is just a pile of garbage, I must say iPods are really something. Gave my Touch away, now getting new Nano.

If you hate that apple wheel so much - go for one of touchy ones :)

Get a Cowon. They make really great solid devices that aren't apple or garbage.
Here's one of the fancier ones.

I've nearly filled my 120 Classic (109GB - 14,500 songs, nothing else). Pretty much my only option is a 160 Classic. The Archos players are nice for video but don't deal with thousands of songs well.

I second cowon, the iaudio series is supposed to be the best in the biz when it comes to sound clarity and audiophile performance...I used to have the iAudio X5 thing was a BEAST

Yeah, I ran across Cowon when looking for iAudio. A friend of mine had an iAudio a while back and it seemed pretty awesome.

Peoples' disdain for Apple and people who like Apple products reminds me of peoples' disdain for BMW and the people who drive BMW's.

                    I don't use Apple products because I'm a fanboi. I don't own a BMW because so-and-so does.

I can understand being annoyed with the Apple scene for sure. But a 160GB iPod Classic is what you need.

Pawn shops man! CD's are like a buck each. ;)

I also recreate a lot of it using digital technology. Computers are amazing man!

Some of us have this thing called a "job" and aren't 18 years old. I've been collecting CD's for the last 10 years.

Still a cd ripped in mp3 is roughly 100mb in good quality

                            500 * 1024 = 512000

                            512000 / 100 = 5120 cds

My Grandpa passed not too long ago and had over 2000 cds... sadly my Dad and his brother and their family thought goodwill was a great place to take them because they already have their own collections.
