The question is if the multiplication comes first or the division. There is an implied multiplication sign between the 2 and the left parenthesis.

And this is where the argument started, because some people think that because the multiplication sign is not present, the number inside the parentheses should be multiplied by two before the whole thing becomes the denominator of the division.

In proper math however, the addition comes first because of the parentheses, then 48 gets divided by 2, and then the two numbers get multiplied together (by the implied multiplication sign, or asterisk, or 'x', or 'X', or whatever you want to call it), resulting in 288.

No the issue inlies with the fact there has been some fucked up teaching of the order of operations (since I have been though school) and that Multiplication ALWAYS precedes division.

When this is in fact not the case (and how we arrive at wrong answers), they are equal operations and need to be done from left to right.
