My mom paid $14k of my college costs.. I didn't ask her to at the time but I did say thanks. I'm 31 now and just finished paying her back. Did she ask for it, no. She's done enough for me growing up and I want her to have a nice easy life now.
I guess it sucks your parents don't love you.

How on earth are parents entitled to send their kid to college to get a degree in art history, or some other bullshit degree? Parents have a right to decide if you are worth it. I was in almost the exact situation. I didn't take the SAT's cause I wouldn't be walking by the time I would be leaving for college. (shattered femur). That was a huge wake up call seeing the bills that were covered by my parents insurance. I thought I had college paid for turns out my parents bailed, when they didn't like my career path. Was that wrong of them? NO! If you haven't exactly scholastically achieved prior and really showed that you were motivated why should your parents start dumping $$$ into a career you may not want like or even make a good living at? If you were a C student and partied regularly, as a parent you guys would pay thousands of dollars a month in tuition? I chose to continue my career without my parents help. It sucked, but it proved two things. 1) I wanted what I was doing bad enough to do it alone. 2) That my parents weren't complete shits and recognized my dedication and began helping me here and there. You were promised something and it didn't come through probably not the first time in your life that happened, and it won't be the last. Maybe when you get the ball rolling your dad will come to your aid.sigpicComment

There's always the Culinary Institute of Tuscany. The Olive Garden menu frequently depicts several happy alumni.
Seriously, that's a bummer situation, but you've gotta get your head cooled off. Ranting about it is a recipe for bad karma.Comment

Shit just got real. Take notice OPOP, for the record, more than a decade out from where you are now, I wish someone would have come along and told me how it really was, so I coulda sacked up and taken care of business sooner, instead, I pissed and moaned about how things didn't go my way, they weren't fair, and how I was getting the short end of the stick. But no, I wallowed and waited for someone to do something. And you know what, no one did. The one person that should have, Me, sat waiting. So, now I'm at a disadvantage, with quite a bit of wasted time to catch up on.
And that is why I've been a full fledged dick in this thread. I hope you take it personally.

To everyone talking shit, shut the fuck up. His dad fucked him over by giving him an empty promise of money. Had he never told him he'd help out with college payments, this guy probably would've gotten a job earlier and started saving. This especially sucks if you were planning on attending a university instead of community college. Now, community college is his only option (at least for a few years) and in about a 4 month period of time to get a job and start saving up. It sounds like your dad is rich as fuck too, so good luck with financial aid.
Your situation is fucked.
Only thing I could say is that maybe you should've contacted your dad about this sooner.
Good luckComment

That sucks OP, keep your chin up and do work.
I agree that a kid should show work ethic in order to get college funding from his/her parents, but I don't think it's a case of pure entitlement. Part of being a good parent is helping your kid be successful in life. Kicking them to the curb at 18 and completely cutting them off doesn't make someone successful down the road, it makes them bitter and likely screwed for life as they try to catch up. Life is not a Cinderella story.Comment

Dude Life is full of EMPTY PROMISES ONE SHOULD NEVER DEPEND ON THEM. If life has taught me ONE thing is DO SHIT FOR YOURSELF. Do you get your dad to hold your dick while taking a piss? I sure hope not. Do you think people that are dealt with misfortune like becoming blind expect it to happen to them? NO.. Do they suck life up and continue on? Sure do.
SHIT HAPPENS LIFE GOES ON.
I wanted my car done by the time all the snow melted. I came down with serious health issues 4 months ago and shit gets delayed. Am I still building my car with no source of income? SURE AM. Is it taking longer then expected? SURE IS. What keeps me going? I know I cant do anything about what life has dealt me and just change my game plan.Comment

That sucks dude, same shit happened to me kinda. I had a good college fund set up, dad found out I had a sc life scholarship. So, he decides to take my college money and spend it on a $200,000 house for him and his gf at the time to live in. I ended up loosing my scholarship over some bs my 2nd year. Needless to say he lost the fucking house and the gf. Now, I'm up to my neck in student loans. Oh well, hopefully I'll be making bank when I graduate after 11 years of college to pay for all this shit. It'll end up being somewhere over $150,000 I have to pay back... fml.Comment

Screwed for life might be a bit much, but you did include "likely" which strikes me as a reasonable qualifier. All in all, I agree wholeheartedly with your point of view. My son is eleven, goes to a private school, and I anticipate I'll be paying for college and probably grad school too. The thing I make perfectly clear to him, on a regular basis, is that I'm not going to pay for (reward) mediocre, half-assed performance. As long as he continues to excel, the gravy train will reward him with a premium education, housing, a cool car etc. Sort of a simplified proxy for a real life career later.I agree that a kid should show work ethic in order to get college funding from his/her parents, but I don't think it's a case of pure entitlement.
