    Camera Junkies

I know, I know...There's a hundred threads about cameras, but as another said..."technology is constantly changing"...

I'm looking for a good "first" camera in the $400-$600 range, not opposed to used if it's quality.

One of my buddies has me looking into a Cannon XSi and my other buddy swears by his Nikon D3000. Any advice, comments, suggestions?

d60, or t2i are great SLR camera's that have good shoooting capabilities and also great video capabilities. but you shoulda put this in the random crap fs/wtb thread

Good point, I wasn't really looking to buy one on here (unless someone has one?) but I was more just looking for advice. I didn't think many people would see it there.

Get a used D90. Just do it.

D3000... never. Atleast get a d3100. I shoot my Moms, it is great for the price.

D3000 is for kids who want a "nice camera".

I'll check out the d90. I think my buddy actually said 3100, I'm pretty sure I just mixed up the numbers.

                D90 is MUCH better.

High shutter count... BUT you could talk him down.

Cali has much better deals I bet

I have the canon 60D good shutter speed and high iso of 6200. Best thing is the lcd screen especially when you want to take those difficult shots when you can't look though the view finder.

The 3100 is actually a reallt nice camera feature wise but one HUGE advantage of the D90 is that it has a in-body focus motor. If you are serious about photography and dont live and die on the video mode then D90, if you will just use it as an advanced point and shoot then 3100 because its got a more modern video mode.

The advantage of the in-body focus motor means the camera will operate and focus the older AFD series lenses, which there are tons of used ones all over the market.
                    Im now E30less.

Bingo. If you think you think you are going to want to get more into it then just one or 2 lenses dont settle for any of the cameras without the built in focus motors. I would snag up a used D90/D80, Im selling my D90 right now with battery grip for $550 but it has around 60k on it and its pretty well used, wouldnt recommend it for much more then backup body. D80 sell for cheap now, I used a minty fresh one as a 2nd body for my last wedding and it was a really solid camera.

Slightly out of your price range but my buddy just picked up a D5100. pretty baller. I use a D40x... I'm ready for an upgrade.

I'm not too familiar with Nikons, but the Canon t2i would be right up your alley. Prices have come down since the release of the t3i (which is nearly identical and has shit-for-all for upgrades, totally overpriced IMO). Don't go with the XSi, it's several years old, doesn't feature video and does not have nearly the same ISO performance.

If you don't want to lug around a DSLR, get the Canon S95. In the words of the link posted above by eLKuRLy, it truly is "the best compact camera in the world". It will take shots 95% as good as a DSLR in most conditions (save for fast-action), costs half as much and is 1/5th the size and weight.

Any of them will give you 99% percent the same image. At this point play with one and see which you prefer.
