I don't like either choice but then again I am getting ready to purchase a fifth wheel. If I had to choose one though I would go with the Tacoma. Better vehicle and hell of a lot better customer service.
Some people just need a sympathetic pat... on the head... WITH A HAMMER!!!
I know you want a mid size truck and I get it from a size aspect but to me I would rather have a 4.8 v8 silverado extended cab. You get better towing, same fuel economy as the v6's, more aftermarket support, and you get a metal bed. There common and cheaper used, the little bit more in size will come in handy.
Not that any of those are gonna change your mind I've offroaded in both of your choices and been on long road trips. The frontier is uglier, the interior is plain, and there is less aftermarket support. But the 4.0 vq v6 is the better motor, the 5 speed auto is better, and do not have the recall or rust issues the current taco has. The frontiers bed does not jump around like the plastic bed the taco does when you offroad nor does the frontiers interior rattle like the taco's.
I'm biased, I don't like toyota's products or the way they are priced, 30k for a mid-size v6 truck WTF, but they hold there value, its a good product, and its better looking than the frontier.
I'd still buy a 4.8 v8 silverado.

I have a friend with a frontier and that truck is pretty beast. Peraonaly I would just get a new chevy full size since they get awesome mpg. And they are always having great incentives to buy new.
CCW- when every second counts... The police are just minutes away!
Talked to two dealers today, going by a third tomorrow. The Nissan's are going out the door for about $5500 under MSRP.
If you can get a 4x4 v6 frontier for 23-24k you did well, my companies employee pricing website will not show a 4x4 v6, but are saying a 4x2 i4 is 21,600. These prices of course do not include sales tax and all the rest of the junk.

I'd buy a Tacoma over the Frontier for one reason...
Frontiers have NO ability to dim the dash lights. It's pre-set to one level.
Most annoying feature ever. My house-mates Frontier is great, but that little thing alone drives me towards a Tacoma.
The Tacoma has a nicer ride too IMHO.
Tailgates are weak.

I process warranty claims for a med/large Nissan dealership. Very few claims come by my desk for Frontiers, even less that Titans. The industry knows that you dont mess around with truck reliability; reputation is everything in this market. So most trucks you get these days are pretty good in that area. Way better than cars. Reliability most likely will not be an issue no matter what truck you go with. It does kind of depend on how long you will keep the truck for. I would trust the Nissan for 10 years, the Toyota for 20+.
Personal preferrence is probably going to be your biggest deciding factor. Drive them both. A lot. Take them both home for a night. If you still cant decide, see who will give you the best price.
UNCHLL, thanks for the tip. I guess for whatever reason I've always been a Nissan fan, and not particularly a Toyota fan. However, I'm still going to go drive both.
But like Victell mentioned, I'm sure in reality, either truck would suit my needs just perfect.

I do not want to DD a 23 year Toyota truck, and I don't want three vehicles.
I want a midsize, 4x4, crew cab. Which leaves a Frontier/Tacoma/Canyon/Colorado.
A 1500? That's a full size truck, SPECIFICALLY what I said I'm not interested in owning. And a base model isn't a crew cab, 4x4, the full size trucks like that start at $40k.
I try hard not to be a dick, but it's like you guys either can't read or are functionally retarded.
