You are thinking just like how i used to think. Skateboarding and Cars were/are my hobby, no doubt. After i started working at a BMW shop, I got so fed up with all the bullshit and stress you have to deal with as a mechanic. Ended up quitting and getting a job in an office. It is really something you have to have a strong passion for. If you enjoy working on your car, thats great! But don't let that fool you into thinking you LOVE working on cars in general because it's completely different than doing it as a hobby. Good luck and make the right choice!

I'm another UTI grad. My opinion is kinda split on the school. I already worked in the field before going so alot of the classes were redundant. I took everything available and will give props to the Diesel school, it was actually pretty good, but the automotive side was mostly not worth the money. I can't complain too much though because I went to STEP after UTI and that was pretty good. Would I do it again? Probaly not, UTI is way to overpriced for what they promised. Also dealers have taken a hard hit from the economy so making a living isn't as easy as it used to be. Just really think about it before you start writing those schools a check.89 325iX - stock but overflowing with factory extras

That is the mother fucking TRUTH. I work 60 plus hours a week, I'm a tech and the last thing I want to do is work on my own car. Its sucks, its definitely taken the fun out of it for me. The only time I have time to work my car is after work and by that time I'm ready to get the hell out of the shop.
^ This. I went to auto tech school and I left after a semester. It was a waste of money IMO. I ended basically being a T.A. and helping the all dumb asses. They really pushed the ASE cert. crap. I know some shops are big into ASE stuff. In reality in come down to experience and knowledge.Comment

No offense to any mechanics in here but if you do have the chance to become a mechanical engineer I´d reccomend that over a mechanics job.
Without doubt better pay , also money to spend on your hobbies.
I´m just finishing
Bsc Motorsport Engineering
Msc Racing Engine Desing
I quit a good IT job to go down this route. My first paycheck is almost here, the first one in 4 years since I quit my job.
I know work for Cosworth.Gunni

I'm a tech and I agree with you. If you can make it through the schooling an engineering degree is a better way to go. I went to school for a while before going to automotive school but I just am not the kind of person who was able to sit through years of school. I love what I do now and don't have plans for a career change but the yearly earnings in the automotive field right now isn't what it used to be.No offense to any mechanics in here but if you do have the chance to become a mechanical engineer I´d reccomend that over a mechanics job.

UTI and MB ELITE program grad here. Become and engineer, get a desk job or something like that. If you become a mechanical engineer you can work on race cars and work with companies like AEM, or you can go to UTI and work on everyday run of the mill cars.sigpicComment

what ive gathered/ made up my mind from this thread:
i want to go to JC for automotive courses, get my foot in the door of a shop get ASE certz.
then work my way up a little in the automotive repair field and then study for engineering and become an engineer and produce a modern day e30 (i kid about that last part lol)
i like the advice i have received in this thread many thanks to the helping minds!

Listen to everyone that says working as a tech makes you hate cars/working on them. I have first hand experience watching this happen. My father loved building Chevelles, Novas and other older muscle cars, went to vocational school and has been a mechanic for the last 30 years.
He had to replace an engine in his Dakota and it was absolute anguish to watch him do it he hated it so much. I offered to help but he declined because he knew he wasn't in a state to be around someone doing anything. For all things 24v, check out Markert Motorworks!Originally posted by mbonanniI hate modded emtree, I hate modded cawrz, I hate jdm, I hate swag, I hate stanceyolokids, I hate bags (on cars), I hate stuff that is slowz, I hate tires.
