yup, been using it since my first deployment back in 07. works for just about any vid file which is clutch when borrowing a friends HD to watch movies over there.
if you google ripping a dvd to hard drive or something similar there should be a lot of freeware/shareware out there that will do it for free. I'm not sure if VLC does this, never heard of it used for this but I could easily be wrong.
I use a program called DVD Decrypter. It has never let me down, and is free. You may have a tough time finding it now; I guess there was legal action taken against the guy who wrote the code. Works with international encryptions as well.
